Henrico supervisors approved the introduction of an ordinance July 25 that would establish the Virginia Center Commons Special Service District and provide public streetlights to that area.

Seventy solar-powered LED lights would be installed at varying heights to light the area surrounding the former mall (a portion of which now is home to the nearly-completed Henrico Sports and Events Center) and provide a safer environment for visitors.

The district will be solely for commercial establishments, and in order to construct, maintain and operate the streetlights, there will be an additional levy on the district’s property taxes, Deputy County Manager for Community Operations Steve Yob told the board.

There will be a public hearing about the ordinance Sept. 12.
