The Henrico Police Athletic League last month earned the $20,000 grand prize as the winner of the Wawa Foundation Virginia Hero Awards, presented as part of the company's 20th anniversary serving Virginia.

Other finalists for the award, given to a Central Virginia nonprofit, were the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Greater Richmond ARC and Miracles In Motion – each of which earned $5,000 awards. The company gave similar awards to nonprofits in two other areas of the state as well.

Voting for the finalists was conducted by the public online. The award was presented last month at the Wawa on Staples Mill Road.
