Henrico County has named longtime staff member H. Bolman Bowles as its new building official, effective Nov. 16. Bowles succeeds Greg Revels, who retired after more than 26 years in the position.
Bowles has served as deputy building official since 1998 and as a member of the staff since 1987, when he began as a civil engineer. In his new role, he will oversee a department of 58 employees with a $6 million budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
The Department of Building Inspections is responsible for reviewing and inspecting structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in buildings and structures throughout Henrico County. The department ensures compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, focusing on the structural stability and fire and electrical safety of new residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Additionally, the department addresses violations of the building code for existing structures. In fiscal year 2023-24, the department issued building permits for $1.4 billion worth of new construction.
Bowles holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech and a master's degree in public administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
