A Henrico County man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison after being found guilty of possession with intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin and fentanyl.

Hugh Mason, 41, was apprehended by law enforcement agents following law enforcement raids in February 2022 on his primary residence in Henrico County and an apartment he used in the city of Richmond.

According to court documents, agents executed search warrants at the two locations and discovered a total of more than 315 grams of a heroin and fentanyl mixture, indicating Mason's intention to distribute the illicit substances.

They also found more than $28,000: items used for preparing and packaging illegal controlled substances for resale; a loaded FN 57, 5.7-caliber semiautomatic handgun; an additional 35.6 grams of heroin; ammunition and magazines for the FN 57 handgun; and digital scales.

During questioning, Mason, a previously convicted felon, admitted to distributing and possessing at least 12 kilograms of cocaine and 3 kilograms of heroin during the course of a year. He also acknowledged that he possessed the firearm for the purpose of safeguarding his drugs, drug proceeds, and himself during drug-trafficking activities.
