A 25-year-old Henrico man who was being transported to the Henrico Jail escaped from police custody at the jail Jan. 18 and spent several hours on the run before being recaptured.

Police had taken Dashawn Keon Hunter into custody on several outstanding warrants from Henrico and Caroline counties, but when they arrived at the jail at about 5:40 p.m., Hunter escaped and fled, prompting a heavy police presence and the lockdown of nearby Hermitage High School. Police apprehended Hunter shortly before 8:30 p.m. just a short distance away, along Shrader Road near Uxbridge Court.

Hunter, who was facing outstanding warrants for the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony (two counts), possession of a firearm, breaking and entering at night to commit a felony while armed, and misdemeanor hit and run, now may face additional charges.

Police communicated the situation with local residents through Nextdoor, the Neighbors app on Ring and through social media platforms and the media.

“We appreciate the community’s support and understanding while there was a heavy police presence in area neighborhoods and around our schools, during this search,” Henrico Police Lt. Matt Pecka said. “Officers worked diligently with multiple resources to take this offender into custody in a timely, safe manner. Our priority is to ensure that our Henrico Community and schools remain a safe place.”
