Henrico man charged with attempted capital murder of Henrico police officer

A Henrico man is under arrest, charged with attempted capital murder of a Henrico Police officer following an incident Aug. 20 near Harvie Road in Eastern Henrico.

Juane Shaundell Lewis, 38, also is charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A Henrico officer was near Harvie and Reynolds roads at about 11:30 p.m., Aug. 20 when gunshots rang out. The officer located two subjects, one of whom appeared to be armed, and ordered them to drop the weapon or weapons. The suspect later identified as Lewis fired multiple shots at the officer before fleeing, according to police.

Additional responding officers located and detained the alleged shooter on Reynolds Road. No injuries were reported.

“The safety and well-being of Henrico’s police officers is now and always will be our top priority. We will be working alongside the commonwealth’s attorney’s office to ensure this crime is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Henrico County Manager, John Vithoulkas.

“The men and women of Henrico Police put their lives on the line every day. We are committed to ensuring our community is protected from those intent on doing harm to others. These officers, when confronted with an armed assailant shooting at them, gave chase until the gunman was apprehended. We will protect our Henrico community,” said Henrico Police Chief, Humberto Cardounel, Jr.
