A 27-year-old Henrico man is in custody after police allege the pick-up truck he was driving struck an ambulance on Midlothian Turnpike, prompting him to flee the scene.

At about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, a private ambulance with a patient who was being taken home was traveling eastbound on Midlothian Turnpike and tried to turn left onto Boulders Parkway when it was struck by a pick-up truck that had run a red light, police said.

No one in the ambulance was hurt, despite significant damage to the vehicle's front end. The driver of the pick-up truck, identified by police as Shawn Paxton of Henrico, flipped on an embankment and then ran from the scene. Police dogs tracked him.

Paxton faces charges of felony hit and run, reckless driving and driving without a seatbelt, according to Chesterfield Police.
