Henrico Library to host signature Black History Month event Feb. 12

Table of Contents

Free Egunfemi, nationally-renowned historian and founder of Untold RVA, will present “5 Things,” an interactive trivia game featuring five little-known facts about black achievement and resistance in Henrico history at Libbie Mill Library Monday, Feb. 12, at 7pm.

Adults and teens are invited to learn about historical self-determination, intersectionality, and resistance by black Henricoans and their allies at the program, which will be the signature event for Black History Month at Henrico County Public Library. The event will also be UntoldRVA’s first Henrico-specific presentation.

Untold RVA was founded in 2013, and is “the people’s choice for the creative advancement of the most powerful narratives hidden in plain sight within Richmond’s commemorative landscape.”  In addition to regular public speaking engagements, Free Egunfemi and Untold RVA research and build interactive art installations around the Richmond area to shed light on hidden histories.

Egunfemi was featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered program in 2016, as part of the “Finding America” series.  She was a panelist for Richmond Magazine’s “The Unmasking: Race & Reality in Richmond” series in January 2017, and was also a panelist for the Lumpkin’s Jail Site Project hearing in March 2017.  In November 2017, Egunfemi was a featured speaker at TedxYouth@RVA.

Other Black History Month programs will take place at all Henrico County Public Library locations throughout February, including a series of short biographical films at Fairfield Library, a discussion of Twisted: My Dreadlock Chronicles with author Dr. Bert Ashe at Glen Allen Library, a lecture from Adele Johnson, director of Richmond’s Black History Museum at Varina Library, and lectures at multiple library locations from the Valentine Museum.

All HCPL Black History Month events can be seen on the library’s events calendar at http://henricolibrary.evanced.info/signup/Calendar?Lib=ALL&ds=2018/02/01&kw=Black+History+Month.
