Henrico County residents have a new way to dispose of food waste, thanks to the Henrico Environmental Action Resource Team. HEART is launching a pilot food waste composting program to divert nutrient-rich "compostables" from landfills and convert them into useful materials for agriculture and landscaping for use elsewhere.

The program, which is free and open to county residents, will accept food waste at:

• Springfield Road Public Use Area, 10600 Fords Country Lane in Glen Allen;

• Charles City Road Public Use Area, 2075 Charles City Road.

The program will accept a wide range of food scraps, including meat and bone scraps, certified compostable plastics, fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, and eggshells. The materials will be processed into reusable soil amendment by NOPE, the county's contracting partner.

Yard waste will continue to be collected separately.

To kick off the program, HEART and Keep Henrico Beautiful are hosting a Pumpkin Composting Event from Nov. 1-8 at both public use areas. Residents are invited to bring their pumpkins (minus lights, candles, and paint) to be composted.

Starting Nov. 9, both locations will accept food waste and pumpkins seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For details, residents can visit the HEART website or call the Henrico Department of Public Utilities' Division of Solid Waste at (804) 501-7277.
