The Henrico County Division of Fire has issued a temporary burn ban beginning at noon March 26. The ban prohibits open-air burning of yard waste, agricultural burns and recreational fires and is expected to be lifted March 28 unless environmental conditions don’t improve.

“We’re at a point where vegetation is dry and therefore highly combustible,” Assistant Henrico Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Scott Sutton said. “And with the forecast calling for high winds and low humidity, even a small spark could turn into a significant event. We’re looking for these conditions to improve before we let the ban expire.”

The ban was recommended by the Henrico Fire Marshal’s Office and approved by Fire Chief Jackson Baynard in accordance with County Code (Sec. 11-19), which states that “open burning (is) prohibited during drought conditions.”

Henrico’s burn ban supersedes the annual statewide burn law that prohibits open air burning between 4 p.m. and midnight from Feb. 15 to April 30.
