The Henrico Education Foundation has hired Darryl Williams as its Community Learning Center program officer. The CLC integrates academics, youth development, family support, health and social  services and community  development at challenged schools.

HEF began implementing a Community Learning Center at Glen Lea Elementary School in the fall of 2015.

“In this approach, schools become the centers of the community and are open to everyone – all day, every day, evenings and weekends," said HEF Executive Director Mike Taylor. "We feel very fortunate to have Darryl who understands the true value of bringing together many partners to offer a range of support and opportunities to students, families and communities.”

The initiative, which includes after-school and summer programming, is designed to:

• help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math;

• offer the students a broad array of enrichment activities that complement their regular academic programs;

• offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating students.

“The Community Learning Center initiative provides Henrico County Public Schools with an opportunity to respond to the challenges our students face both inside and outside of the classroom,” Taylor said.

Williams previously worked as a family and community engagement coordinator and family advocate for Henrico Schools. In both roles, he was responsible for increasing the success of at-risk students through programming that linked schools, families and community partners.

Williams also leads Henrico County’s ManUp Fatherhood Initiative, which seeks to increase the number of children growing up with an involved, responsible and committed father/male figure through proactive educational programs. He recently earneed the Manny Award by the My Brother’s Keeper of Greater Richmond for his efforts.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications from Virginia State University.
