Henrico convention July 3-8 to feature flower show, plant sale

The Gesneriad Society is bringing its 66th annual convention to the Westin Richmond Hotel July 3-8.The group is an all-volunteer international organization devoted to the identification, culture, propagation, and conservation of gesneriads, which can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

The gesneriad family contains more than 3,400 species of plants and countless hybrids.  In addition to the popular African violet, some of the more familiar gesneriads grown by hobbyists are the florist gloxinia, lipstick plant, goldfish plant, cape primrose, flame violet, and Cupid’s Bower.

The convention will include free admission to the flower show and plant sale on July 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and July 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plants will be for sale from several commercial vendors as well as from individual hobbyists. Many of the plants cannot be found locally.
