Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, will host a virtual information session Aug. 3 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for people who may be interested in volunteering to serve as CASAs on behalf of abused or neglected children. To register, click here.

Henrico CASA volunteers advocate both in court and outside it for children and teens experiencing abuse and neglect. Volunteers can advocate for children’s education by helping teachers, coaches, counselors, and school administrators understand the child’s unique challenges. They also can advocate for school stability for the children they serve.

During cases in which a school change is inevitable, CASA volunteers can help ensure a seamless transfer between schools and lessen the negative impact of the school move on the child, according to agency officials.

“Students experiencing abuse and neglect face unique challenges, but they deserve every opportunity to thrive just like their classmates,” Henrico CASA Executive Director Jeannine Panzera said.

CASA volunteers are screened and trained to advocate for a child or sibling group, then get to know the child or children on an individual level so that they can make sure their physical, emotional, and educational needs are met. They also get to know the important people in their life to help make sure the child is living in a safe, stable home.

“Every vulnerable child should have an advocate who is committed to helping them be successful,” says Panzera. “As a CASA volunteer, you can help ensure that a child gets the support they need both in school and beyond – giving them a better chance at a brighter future.”
