The McShin Foundation, a Henrico-based recovery community organization, was among eight Virginia-based nonprofits and 361 nationwide that earned donations from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving program, whose grants were announced Tuesday morning.

McShin will receive $2 million from the program that it will use to help its efforts to provide access to housing and housing development; incarceration and justice system involvement and mental and behavioral health, according to the Yield Giving website.

Scott will give $640 million in total – more than twice the amount she initially had pledged to give through the program, after initially announcing last year that she would award $1 million to each of 250 organizations selected through an open call for applications.

Nonprofits with annual budgets of between $1 million and $5 million were eligible to apply, and a total of more than 6,300 did so.

McShin was among 279 nonprofits to receive $2 million – the top level of funding in the program – as a result of receiving a top score from a panel of external reviewers. The other 82 organizations each received $1 million.

McShin, founded in 2004 by husband-and-wife team John Shinholser and Carol McDaid, serves people re-entering the community from jails, prisons or institutions; recovery-resistant people with a history of reoccurrence of use; and individuals seeking aftercare from local addiction treatment centers. It is based at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church in Lakeside and operates a 15,000-square-foot recovery center and more than 100 recovery residence beds in the region.

"While providing the tools for recovering individuals to create positive lifestyles, we provide housing, family programming, and a safe environment to embark on a recovery journey," organization officials wrote in a description of their services.

Scott is the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and received a reported $38.3 billion in Amazon stock as terms of the divorce. She has given away more than $16.5 billion of it in the past five years.
