Henrico athletes to be honored at June 4 awards dinner

Table of Contents

Among the Richmond Region’s finest high school scholar-athletes to be honored at the 27th annual Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner June 4 will be a half dozen finalists from Henrico schools – and a Highland Springs H.S. graduate will be the featured speaker.

The finalists from Henrico include Carter Bristow of Douglas Freeman, Ashley Henneberger of Glen Allen, Lexi Long of Deep Run, Cory O’Shea of Mills Godwin, Scott Phillips of Collegiate and Matthew Whelan of J.R. Tucker.

The finalists will attend the dinner not knowing who the male and female Scholar-Athletes of the Year will be. The two winners will each receive a $7,500 scholarship. A male and female runner-up will receive $5,000 each, while the remaining finalists will each receive a $2,500 grant. Finalists were chosen from a pool that included one male and one female nominee from each high school within the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s primary circulation area.

Henrico native Andre Ingram, a Highland Springs High School graduate who was the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2003, will be featured at the ceremony. Ingram went on from HSHS to become a student-athlete at American University and play for the National Basketball Association, where his standout performance with the Los Angeles Lakers in early April captured the nation’s attention.

Limited tickets for the dinner, to be held at the Jefferson Hotel, may still be available.  For ticket details, call Faith Hecht at Sports Backers at 285-9495, ext. 250 or faith@sportsbackers.org.
