The Henrico Police Animal Shelter is temporarily closed to the public, as a result of rising infections among its animals, which officials said could lead to canine influenza if not properly addressed.

Testing and a quarantine process is underway to ensure all animals are safe and healthy, Henrico Police officials said in a press release.

While the shelter is closed, the Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit will not be able to pick up stray dogs or receive any surrendered animals. The unit only will be able to pick up animals involved with biting incidents or animal cruelty cases until the shelter reopens to the public.

Citizens who find a stray dog or cat are asked to try to find the owners. On a limited basis, shelter officials may be able to provide a crate and food until the shelter's quarantine is over.

All appointments made at the shelter are being postponed, and officials are contacting those who had appointments scheduled. They will make calls to reschedule those appointments once the quarantine period has ended.
