HCPS's Spring Family Learning Series offers workshops for parents, teachers

Families face challenges; Henrico Schools’ Family Learning Series is designed to help. The school division’s spring edition will offer a series of workshops on topics such as dyslexia, test preparation and summer resources for families. The series is presented by Henrico Schools’ Department of Family and Community Engagement.

The workshops include:

• May 8, noon to 1:30 p.m. – SOLs and Your Students: Find out how you can help your child prepare for SOL assessment tests; Varina Area Library, 1875 New Market Road.

• May 9, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – SOL Preparation: Hear about ways to support your child and review strategies for success; find out about SOL requirements and learn about practice tests and other resources on the Virginia Department of Education’s website; Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, 1440 N. Laburnum Avenue.

• May 15, noon to 1:30 p.m. – Understanding Dyslexia and Other Reading Problems: Learn facts about dyslexia and strategies to address challenges it can pose for students, families and teachers; New Bridge Learning Center, 5915 Nine Mile Road.

• May 16, 6p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Raising a Confident Child: What’s Your Parenting Style? A healthy sense of self-esteem can empower children – but how can families avoid instilling children with feelings of entitlement? Parenting styles can affect children in a host of ways. Find out about your parenting style and how to use it in effective ways; New Bridge Learning Center, 5915 Nine Mile Road.

• May 22, noon to 1:30 p.m. – Summer Enrichment Activities: Explore summer learning and experiential activities for children of all ages, from preschool to high school. Learn about at-home activities as well as camps and other summer resources in Central Virginia; New Bridge Learning Center, 5915 Nine Mile Road.
