GRASP awards 32 scholarships to Henrico students

GRASP, a Virginia College Access non-profit organization headquartered in Glen Allen, recently awarded 164 scholarships to students at Virginia high schools – including 32 from Henrico County.

GRASP awarded 105 Last Dollar scholarships totaling $106,945 to Virginia high school students who graduated this year, including the following students from Henrico: Mariam Al-Khafaji of ACE Center at Hermitage; Innocence Page of ACE Center at Highland Springs; Darryl Fulton and Rahima Maisha from Deep Run High School; Sara Nicoletti of Freeman High School; DeShawn Threatts of Glen Allen High School; Vivian Nguyen of Godwin High School; Jordan Gray and Alexa Williams from Henrico High School; Payton Dunn and Ethan Pitts III from Hermitage High School; Kiandra Mcleod and Shailyn Washington from Highland Springs High School; Diamond Henley of Tucker High School; and Taylah Randall and Trinity Wright from Varina High School.

Last Dollar scholarships are small, targeted grants to help students pay for expenses frequently not covered by financial aid packages such as books and technology needs.

GRASP awarded 59 Community College Pathway scholarships totaling $59,000 to Virginia high school students who graduated this year, including the following students from Henrico: Mariam Al-Khafaji of ACE Center at Hermitage; Destiny Andrews of Deep Run High School; Ahmed Kafar, Eldina Mahmutovic and Nataliya Zabrovska from Freeman High School; Ryan Hamburg and Joseph Whitlock from Glen Allen High School; April Reynolds of Godwin High School; Dyeshanna Brown-Sanderson and Alexus Johnson of Henrico High School; Asha Pradhan of Hermitage High School; Yadira Colin, Marie-Elodie Sokpolie and Daniel Nguyen from Tucker High School; and Jada Fernandez and Riley Smith from Varina High School.

Community College Pathway scholarships assist students in either obtaining a workforce credential or transferring from community college to receive a baccalaureate degree from one of Virginia’s colleges and universities at a lower cost and with less debt. Select applicants will be awarded a scholarship of $1000 applied to their first year of community college which may be renewed for a second year. These scholarships help meet the cost of books, a computer, or other expenses not covered by the student’s financial aid package.

GRASP also awarded 79 College Success scholarships totaling $116,100 to college students participating in GRASP’s College Success Program.

GRASP’s goal is to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity for continuing education after high school, regardless of financial or social circumstances. GRASP implements its programs during the academic year via advisors who provide free, confidential, one-on-one counseling in 90 Virginia high schools to students seeking financial aid and scholarships for continuing education after high school – whether at technical school, community college or a four-year university.
