GRASP, a Virginia College Access non-profit organization, recently awarded 286 scholarships to students at Virginia high schools – including 42 from Henrico County.

GRASP awarded 134 “2+2” scholarships for students at GRASP-served schools, including the following students from Henrico: Mony Keo of Deep Run H.S.; Francisco Gaytan, Geovanna Ribeiro, Kirsten Blankenship, Rachael Carr and Jonatan Gonzalez from Freeman H.S.; Joshua Boutier from Godwin H.S.; Khalia McFadden and Jada Dandridge from Henrico H.S.; AJ DelValle and Stephanie Segovia from Hermitage H.S.; Sandy Girgis from Hermitage Technical Center; Deon Robinson and Nydirra Ware from Highland Springs H.S.; Jaden Barton, Chris Oliver and De'zjaughn Wilson from Highland Springs Technical Center; and Lindsay Sharma from Varina H.S.

GRASP’s 2 + 2 scholarship is designed to assist students in receiving a baccalaureate degree from one of Virginia’s colleges and universities at a relatively low cost and with less debt. Select applicants are awarded a scholarship of $1,000 for their first year at a Virginia community college, which can be renewed for the student’s second year at a Virginia community college based on successful completion of 30 credit hours and a GPA required by the student’s intended four-year college or university.  Additionally, all 2+2 scholarship students may be eligible for Virginia’s Two-Year College Transfer Grant of up to $6,000 to help pay for the final two years at a qualifying college or university.

GRASP also awarded 152 Last Dollar scholarships totaling $149,000 to Virginia high school students who graduated this year, including the following students from Henrico: Maria Aralu of Deep Run H.S.; Adam Berlinerman, Carolyn Colombo, and George Mwangi of Freeman H.S.; Nicholas Steponavicius and Camille Wood of Glen Allen H.S.; Justin Williamson of Godwin H.S.; Martrel Johnson and Daquan Wiggins of Henrico H.S.; Jaramona Whitehurst of Hermitage H.S.; Ching Duong and Du Tran of Hermitage Technical Center; Dayoni Escalante and Trinity Love of Highland Springs H.S.; Kelvin Travers of Highland Springs Technical Center; Brennan Branch of Northstar Academy; Mohamed Afilal, Jordyn Fleming, Diore Linsey and Sara Tran of Tucker H.S.; Danasia Chavis and Derrick Redd of Virginia Randolph H.S.; and Imiir Carrington and Jordan Newton of Varina H.S.

GRASP’s goal is to ensure that every student has an equal opportunity for continuing education after high school, regardless of financial or social circumstances. GRASP implements its programs during the academic year via advisors who provide free, confidential, one-on-one counseling in 76 Virginia high schools to students seeking financial aid and scholarships for continuing education after high school – whether at technical school, community college or a four-year university. Many of this year’s Last Dollar scholarship winners will be the first members of their families to attend post-secondary education.

GRASP advisors serve students and families in 76 Virginia schools, from the greater Richmond area to Highland County in the west, Lancaster County in the east, and Sussex County in the south. GRASP was co-founded in 1983 by Senator Walter Stosch and Dr. Ray Gargiulo. For details about GRASP, visit grasp4va.org.
