Community members are rallying around a Varina High School student who was paralyzed by an Oct. 15 incident. A GoFundMe page seeking to raise $130,000 for the medical costs of Jamari Dabney had raised more than $11,500 as of Dec. 1.

Dabney, a junior at Varina and member of the Blue Devils’ football team, suffered a category 6 spinal injury that left him paralyzed.

“He has a long road to recovery to regain full mobility, functionally and healing from his chest bone down to his feet,” family members wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Jamari is a strong, courageous and determined young man. We believe and want Jamari to walk again!! We want Jamari to finish high school, further his education and have a bright future!!”

The Varina High School football community is backing the effort to raise money for Dabney, too.

“We need Route 5 Nation to get behind one of our own,” a Blue Devils’ team representative wrote on the program’s Facebook page. “Jamari’s medical bills are piling up and his insurance has informed the family that they will end coverage of this injury on December 25th.”
