Mills Godwin High School will honor former longtime principal John B. McGinty, for whom the school's commons area was renamed in December, during a dedication event Feb. 26 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Henrico County School Board voted unanimously to name the area the John B. McGinty Commons in honor of the man who served as assistant principal at the school from 1982-1991 and principal from 1991-2003. Members of the public are invited to attend the dedication and celebrate McGinty’s contributions to the school.

“Mr. McGinty was instrumental in creating the culture of excellence that carries on at Mills Godwin High School today,” said Leigh Dunavant, Mills Godwin’s current principal and a student at the school during McGinty’s tenure. “He loved being the principal at Godwin, and he attended each athletic event and performance. He spent his time in the morning and at lunchtime talking with students in the Godwin commons, so it is only right for the community to support the naming of the commons for him.”

Godwin High School is located at 2101 Pump Road.

Those unable to attend the event are welcome to send a message to John McGinty at jbmcgintycommons@gmail.com.
