A Glen Allen student was among 15 college-bound Virginia students to earn a $2,000 academic scholarship through a long-running program from Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen.

The law firm recently announced the 2023 recipients of its George E. Allen Academic Scholarship, which awards local students who have thrived in the face of adversity with scholarships as they start their college careers.

The 15 students will attend schools across the U.S., ranging from Virginia Commonwealth University and Rappahannock Community College to the University of Virginia and Harvard University.

Laylo Yusupova was among the recipients. Yusupova, a senior at Deep Run High School, is planning to attend VCU but has not decided officially upon a college yet. She intends to major in biology and later to attend medical school.

“Over the years, we’ve been amazed by the passion, drive and motivation of the students we’ve met as a result of the George E. Allen Academic Scholarship, and this trend has continued into 2023,” said Edward Allen, president of the Allen Law Firm. “We know these $2,000 scholarships are going to help pave the way for more successes moving forward, and we look forward to seeing all that these students accomplish.”

Recipients were honored at an event on May 9.

In its 32nd year, the George E. Allen Academic Scholarship has awarded students across Allen & Allen’s operating areas with more than $600,000 since its inception. The scholarship was created to honor the firm’s founder, George E. Allen, Sr., who overcame hardships to put himself through college and law school.

Yusupova describes herself as being passionate about learning new languages; she currently speaks Uzbek, Russian, and Turkish fluently and is hopeful of adding more languages to her repertoire.

"I am so grateful for the GEA Scholarship and the impact it will have on my future career," she said.
