A Glen Allen man is facing charges after TSA officials found a loaded .380-caliber firearm in his carry-on items at the Richmond International Airport security checkpoint May 30.

The x-ray machine at the checkpoint alerted officials to the gun. The man was cited on a weapons charge and also faces a civil penalty of as much as $15,000.

It was the 15th time this year a firearm has been detected at the airport's checkpoint – a pace that would more than double last year's total of 17.

“Time and time again we are seeing travelers continue to bring their firearms to our checkpoints instead of properly packing them for a flight,” said Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s federal security director for the airport. “Folks, if you want to travel with your firearm, all that we ask is that you pack it the right way for a flight."

TSA officials go on to say that guns can only be flown with checked baggage, and that travelers with concealed gun carry permits must also comply with local regulations.
