A Glen Allen man was arrested Dec. 19 after attempting to bring a .40-caliber handgun loaded with 11 bullets through a security checkpoint at Richmond International Airport.

TSA officials noticed the items as they entered the security checkpoint X-ray machine at the airport, then alerted airport police, who confiscated them and arrested the man.

It was the 21st time this year that a weapon had been confiscated at a checkpoint at the airport – the most during the past five years.

“To date, TSA has stopped 50 percent more handguns this year than last year at Richmond, and when you consider that the passenger volume is significantly lower due to the pandemic, it is an extremely disappointing trend,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Richmond International Airport Chuck Burke.

A typical first offense for carrying a loaded handgun into a checkpoint is $4,100 but can go as high as $13,669, depending upon the circumstances.

Last year and in 2018, a total of 14 guns were stopped at the airport. The total number in 2017 was 18, and in 2016 was 10.
