Gasoline prices in Metro Richmond have been steady during the past week, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The average cost of a gallon of unleaded gas in Virginia is $2.62 as of May 6 – the same price last week. The Richmond-area average is $2.63, just one cent higher than last week and 18 cents cheaper than the national average. Last year at the same time, the average cost for Metro Richmond was $2.16.

“We expect prices to continue increasing, potentially another 5 to cents through Memorial Day,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Tammy Arnette. “While at least nine states have hit the $3/gallon mark, AAA does not expect the national average to reach $3/gallon this year.”

AAA expects consumers to see the most expensive prices in four years this summer driving season when retailers make the switch to the summer-blend gasoline on June 1.
