The Wildcats’ field hockey team continued its dominant season with a 2-1 win against Freeman on the road, to remain undefeated. Its next game will be against Midlothian.

Deep Run football fell to 1-2 on the season after a loss to Henrico last week. With some limited numbers on the varsity roster, including injuries to all of their starting running backs, the Wildcats turned to team captain Colby Taylor, who took on the role of running back for the first time and ran like he had been playing the position for years. He produced a total of 133 yards, catching balls in double coverage, breaking tackles, and displaying strong blocking. Taylor also had five tackles on the other side of the ball. Deep Run will play Patrick Henry this week.

Freeman High School
The Mavericks’ field hockey team lost 2-1 in an overtime thriller against an undefeated Deep Run team. Their lone score was from AC Ferguson, assisted by Sarah Chilton. In their game against Collegiate, Chilton was the Mavericks’ lone scorer. The team will face Glen Allen next.

Freeman’s football team defeated Mechanicsville 21-6 to stay undefeated at 3-0. Top performances included Virginia Tech-commit Jason Abbey, who was disruptive on defense all night long with 10 tackles, one sack, and a blocked punt that led to a touchdown. Freeman receiver PJ Moore caught eight passes for 93 yards; Miguel Martin had 10 carries for 51 yards; Jadyn Reece had 60 yards of total offense, including a three-yard touchdown run; and Kevin China ran 21 yards to the house in the fourth quarter. The Mavericks will play Atlee next.

The Mavericks’ golf team defeated Maggie Walker 166 to 174 in a nine-hole match Thursday. The medalist for the day was Freeman’s Charlie White (38). The team will face Matoaca and Godwin next.

Glen Allen High School

The defending boys’ volleyball state champions have improved to 5-0 this year, and most recently took down Maggie Walker, 3-0. The Jaguars were led by Andrew Onusconich, who had eight kills; Riley Irman, who had 14 digs and two aces; and Jake Onusconich, who had 28 assists. They will face Godwin in their next game this week.

Glen Allen’s girls’ soccer team, which had not allowed a goal all season, lost in a thriller against the Godwin Eagles, 3-2. With the Jaguars down 2-1, Ava Walker put her team back in the game, ultimately sending the game into a sudden death overtime. With both defenses making outstanding stops, it was Godwin that would prevail. Glen Allen will play Freeman next.

Glen Allen’s football team took out Patrick Henry 37-25. The Jags were led by star running back Will Noel, who ran for 144 yards on 19 carries and scored one touchdown. Andrew Milwit had a strong day, with 188 yards passing and three touchdowns in total, while his top receiver, Ford Michelow, had four receptions for 70 yards and caught two touchdown passes. Glen Allen is now 1-2 and will play Hermitage next.

Glen Allen’s first-team all-region baseball catcher, Cameron Slough, committed to Christopher Newport University this week.

Godwin High School

The Eagles boys’ volleyball had a massive upset victory against Deep Run, winning t3-2. The Eagles are now on a two-game win streak and will look to carry that momentum into their next game against Glen Allen.

Godwin’s football team defeated Atlee 34-31 last week to improve to 2-1 on the season. Quarterback Daniel Viener had a big night, completing 75% of his passes for 225 yards and four passing touchdowns, and he added a rushing touchdown to secure the win. Receiver Nick Clark also had a big night, with 148 yards and two touchdowns. The Eagles will face Hanover next.

The Eagles field hockey team had a big win against previously-unbeaten Glen Allen, triumphing 3-2 in a sudden death overtime game. Reagan Shifflett had the game-winning goal in overtime and assisted on a goal by Catherine Kane. The team will face Maggie Walker next.

Henrico High School

Henrico defeated Deep Run 31-3 in their varsity football game Friday. Calvin Sanders scored the Warriors’ first touchdown on a 25-yard run. After a field goal and a scoop-and-score touchdown from the Henrico defense, the Warriors went up 17-3. TyJon Gunder found the endzone on a rushing touchdown late in the third. To finish things off, Sean Macon threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Javion Randall. The Warriors are now 2-1 on the season and host Hopewell this week.

Hermitage High School

Hermitage dropped to 2-1 on the football season after a 42-21 loss to Thomas Dale. Despite the loss, the Panthers had some strong performances, including those by quarterback KaRon Burton (184 yards of total offense, including a 33-yard touchdown run) and running back Jeremiah Coney (who turned in another huge night with 33 carries for 185 rushing yards and two touchdowns). Hermitage will face defending state champion Varina (2-0) next.

The Panthers’ field hockey team lost to a strong Tucker team, 1-0, falling in sudden death overtime. It will face Henrico next.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers – arguably the best football team in Virginia – had themselves a day last week, defeating Prince George 63-0. Top performers included Eli Williams (who had a 67-yard rushing touchdown), Takye Heath (who had a pick-six and a 12-yard touchdown reception), Tomondrey Braxton (who had a pick-six 6), and Khristian Martin (who had two passing touchdowns, along with a 10-yard rushing touchdown). Eric Bird, Javon Robinson and Caron Ferguson each had a 20-plus-yard rushing touchdown, while Jakyre Henley had a 38-yard touchdown reception. The Springers next face the top team in West Virginia (the Martinsburg Bulldogs) in a nationally ranked battle this week.

J.R. Tucker High School

The Tigers’ football team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 12-6 overtime loss to Meadowbrook, the first game Meadowbrook has won since 2017. The Tigers had a strong performance from quarterback Kobby Owusu, who was able to send the game into overtime with his 27-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. The Tigers will face Deep Run next.

Tucker’s boys’ volleyball team defeated Mechanicsville 3-0. The Tigers were led by Jai Keskar, who had six kills and 14 assists, and Justin Helberg, who had nine kills on the day. The team next will face off against Lloyd C. Bird this week.

The Tigers field hockey team improved to 4-1 with a 1-0 overtime victory against Hermitage. The team will face Glen Allen (3-1) next.

Varina High School

The Blue Devils girls’ volleyball team captured its first win of the season last week, claiming the final set 15-8 to take a 3-2 win over Henrico. They will look to start a winning streak when they face Meadowbrook next.
