The Wildcats golf team now has won the Region 5C title for the ninth time in the last 10 years with an overall team score of 598, defeating the Godwin Eagles (608) by 10 shots. Miles Rhoden had the lowest score of the tournament (68) and defeated his rival, Nick Collins of Godwin (the defending Region 5C champion), to win the individual title. Ellis Hobbie finished third overall, while Caden Sherman tied for fourth place.

Deep Run’s girls volleyball team has had a dominant start to their season. After 10 games, the Wildcats have only lost a grand total of four sets and have won seven matches by a 3-0 score. The Wildcats currently are 10-0 on the year and will look to keep their undefeated season alive when they host Maggie Walker in their next game.

Freeman High School

The Mavericks field hockey team has won two of its last three games to improve to 6-6 on the season. They won two games in a row (8-2 over Tucker and 6-0 over Hermitage) before dropping a 3-2 overtime thriller. Against Tucker, Freeman was led by Sarah Chilton (three goals), AC Ferguson (two goals), Camilla Burnside (one goal) and Emily Carver (one goal). Assists on the night came from Meg Pollard (two) and Anne RileyPounders, Avery Fonville,Mackenzie Fellows and Liza Haymore (one apiece). In their second straight win over Hermitage, the Mavericks had one goal from apiece from Tayloe Tweardy, Adair Reid, Celia Acey, Fellows and Haymore. Fonvile and Chilton each had two assists, while Alyssa Farrell and Fellows each had an assist. In their overtime matchup against the Deep Run Wildcats, the team was led by Fonville and Fellows, who each had one goal, Ryley Parker and Pollard (who each had an assist), and a tremendous performance from goalie Ellie Clements, who had 27 saves on the night. The Mavericks will now host Glen Allen in their next game on Monday.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars football team had a huge win against the Godwin Eagles Oct. 3, winning 39-0 to improve to 2-3 on the season. Will Noel got things started with a 23-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 6-0. Noel continued to make his presence felt as he scored again from one yard out to make it 13-0. Late in the second quarter, Andrew Milwit added a 18-yard rushing touchdown to give the Jags a 20-0 lead before the end of the half.

In the second half, Noel found the endzone for the third time on the night, and Xavier Moss scored on a rushing touchdown to push the lead to 32-0. Sam Tucker would be the final Jaguar to find the endzone on the night, with a seven-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Glen Allen will face off against Tucker at home in its next game on Friday.

The boys volleyball team continued its dominant season with another victory over Deep Run and another over James River to improve to 12-0 on the season. In their matchup versus Deep Run, the Jaguars were led by Edwin Barrack, who had 13 kills on the night, while Duncan Rutowski had six kills and two blocks. Their next game will be on the road this Thursday against Maggie Walker.

Henrico High School

After a string of losses, the Warriors’ boys volleyball team won its third game of the season with its second 3-0 win against the Varina Blue Devils. Now at 3-8 on the season, the team will look to start a winning streak against Patrick Henry on the road.

The Warriors’ girls volleyball on the same night matched the boys' energy with 3-0 win over Varina themselves. This was also the girls third win of the season, after the same four-game losing streak the boys endured. The girls are now 3-10 this season and will host Patrick Henry next.

Hermitage High School

Though the field hockey team has dropped to 2-8 on the season, the Panthers had a tremendous performance by goalie Maya Jozic in their loss to the Godwin Eagles last Monday. She had a personal best of 22 saves on the day, holding Godwin to nine goals. Hermitage will look to turn things around in its next game, a home contest with Tucker on Wednesday.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers football team had yet another dominant performance Monday, defeating Colonial Forge 56-0 to improve to 6-0 on the season (and 4-0 in road games). Jakyre Henley got the party started with a seven-yard touchdown in the middle of the second quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead. With seconds to spare in the first half, quarterback Khristian Martin found Henley on a 28-yard touchdown pass to put the Springers up 14-0. Colonial Forge then fumbled on the kickoff return, and Martin capitalized and found Takye Heath on a 32-yard touchdown pass to end the half at 21-0.

In the second half, Martin scored on a six-yard touchdown run. Minutes later, Heath took it 76 yards to the house on a punt return for a touchdown, making the score 35-0 in the middle of the third quarter. To start the fourth quarter, George Lovelace caught a touchdown reception, then Elijah Williams scored on a 63-yard touchdown run shortly after to give the Springers a 49-0 lead. They would score the last of their 56 points on a 52-yard touchdown run from Javon Robinson late in the fourth quarter. Their next game will be against Patrick Henry (4-1) this Friday.

J.R. Tucker High School

The Tigers’ field hockey team, which started off the season with a record of 4-1, had a string of four losses during the month of September. But with Wednesday’s game, the team got itself back into the win column with a solid 5-1 victory over Lloyd C. Bird to finish off the month on a high note. The Tigers are now 5-5 on the season and will look to keep their momentum going during their next match-up, a road game against Hermitage.

Mills Godwin High School

Sophomore baseball player Luke Smyers made a big verbal commitment to the University of Alabama last Wednesday. On the same day, star second baseman Cole Powers committed to the University of Mary Washington to continue his career.

Godwin’s golf team finished as the runner-up at the Region 5C Golf Championships last week. Nick Collins, who came in as the defending individual champion, managed to pick up second place this time around, and Matkins Milligan placed fourth in a three way tie. Both will play in the state tournament next.

Varina High School

The Blue Devils’ football team remained undefeated after their 21-12 victory over the previously undefeated Hanover Hawks (5-1). Eric Smith was the first to find the end zone for Varina with a one-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, quarterback Myles Derricott found Smith on a touchdown pass to but the Devils up 14-6 at halftime. Late in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils were holding on to a 14-12 lead after Hanover found the end zone on their previous possession. Facing adversity, Derricott led his team down the field, ultimately scoring a crucial touchdown run up the middle from five yards out to put Varina up by the final 21-12 margin with less than three minutes remaining in the game. The Blue Devil defense ended things from there, with Darius Wilson recording a key sack with just more than one minute remaining to seal the win. Varina is now 5-0 this season and will travel to Armstrong (3-3) for its next game Friday.
