Deep Run High School

Jayson Morgan, a 6-foot-9, 270-pound defensive end for the Wildcats football team, was named to the Blue-Grey All American Bowl watch list last Monday. Morgan has several interests from Division I programs, including an offer from Temple this year. Watch him and his team face off against Tucker in their next game on Thursday.

After starting 2-0, then going on a three-game losing streak, the Wildcats boys volleyball team got things back on track last week with a 3-1 win on the road against Freeman. The team will look to continue this momentum in its next matchup at home against Tucker.

Freeman High School

The Mavericks football team improved to 4-0 this season with a 35-19 victory over Atlee. Miguel Martin had a huge day, rushing for 250 yards on 16 carries with three rushing touchdowns. Ryan Brand added onto Freeman’s rushing total with 72 yards on 10 carries. The team will face Godwin next.

Freeman runner Charlotte Gardner was presented the Douglas Freeman Athlete of the Week Award for her showing at the Mavericks cross country meet last week. She was the team's top finisher and took 90 seconds off her personal best in the 5k, (from 22:36.8 to 20:44.2).

Last week, Freeman athletics earned the “Stay In The Game” award from the Virginia High School League for its display of sportsmanship during its teams’ events.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars field hockey squad improved to 5-1 this week after defeating Freeman 5-2 and Tucker 6-0. In its most recent game against Tucker, Glen Allen had a variety of players put points on the board. In the first quarter, Kendall Von Herbulis scored first with an assist from Ally Von Herbulis. In the second, Maggie Leonard scored with an assist from Ava Walker. In the third quarter, Kendall Von Herbulis scored again, this time assisted by Catherine Zorn, then Leonard scored again with an assist from Ryleigh Riviello. Catherine Zorn also scored, and the last goal of the day was from Ava Walker, who was assisted by Kendall Herbulis. The Jaguars started the week with a matchup against Hermitage.

The defending state champions in volleyball have put on a display of complete dominance this season. With their 3-0 win versus Godwin last Tuesday, the Jaguars are now 6-0 on the season, and have not lost a single set, winning all of their games so far 3-0.

Henrico High School

The Henrico Warriors football team dropped to 2-2 after its 25-15 loss to the Hopewell Blue Devils. Quarterback Sean Macon threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Calvin Sanders and TyJon Gunter. Sanders led the team in receiving yards, totaling 109 yards on eight receptions. The Warriors next will face the nationally ranked Highland Springs Springers this week.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers football team fell to a strong Varina team this past weekend in a game that featured a strong defensive effort by both squads, which showed in the 13-0 final score. Though Hermitage did not find the end zone, it was led by running back Jeremiah Coney who had 65 yards rushing on 15 attempts. The Panthers are now 2-2 on the season and will move onto Glen Allen this Friday.

Hermitage’s field hockey team enjoyed a 3-0 win against Henrico last Wednesday. The Panthers were led by Stella Jozic and Evelyn Gosney as they improved to 2-4 this season. They began this week with a road game at Glen Allen.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers football team made a statement last week, traveling to West Virginia to take on Martinsburg in one of the most anticipated high school football games in the country. The Springers trounced the home team, 34-3, thanks to a stellar effort led by star quarterback Khristian Martin. Martin was 10 of 18 passing, for 300 yards and one touchdown. He also had 114 rushing yards on 11 carries and three rushing touchdowns. Highland Springs is now 4-0 this season and will face the Henrico Warriors on Thursday.

Godwin High School

Godwin’s field hockey team had a close game against Atlee, falling just short, 2-1. The Eagles' lone scorer was Reagan Shiflett. The loss dropped them to 4-2, and they will face Freeman next.

The Eagles football team is now 2-2 this year after its 41-24 loss to Hanover last week. Daniel Viener connected with Nick Clark on a 56-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Minutes later, Viener connected with Cohen Busbee on a 32-yard passing touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Viener scored on a QB sneak, giving him three touchdowns overall on the night. Godwin will face rival Freeman in its next game on Friday.

Tucker High School

Tigers cornerback and wide receiver Camron Williams received his second offer (from Carthage College) last week. His first offer was from Clarke University this past summer. Williams has had a strong senior campaign so far this year, playing at a high level in every aspect of the game. The Tigers were on a bye last week but will travel to take on Deep Run (1-3) on Thursday night.

Varina High School

The defending state champions remained undefeated, improving to 3-0 after escaping a big-time matchup against Hermitage with a hard-fought 13-0 win. Late in the second quarter, Myles Derricott connected with Ben Blakley on a 70-yard pass for their first score. Tae‘mon Brown added a rushing touchdown in the middle of the third quarter. The Blue Devils will face Mechanicsville in their next matchup.
