The Wildcats’ football squad fell to 1-6 on the season after a 23-7 loss to Tucker (2-4) last Thursday. The game started off slowly for both teams, whose offenses struggled to find a rhythm. However, Deep Run got on the board first when quarterback Trey Gauch found Shann Patel on a two-yard touchdown pass, giving the Cats a 7-0 lead with just more than 10 minutes to play in the first quarter. At the half, Deep Run led 7-3 but then was unable to stop a Tigers offense that put up 20-unanswered points that started late in the third quarter. The Wildcats will move on to play a strong Thomas Jefferson team (5-0) this Friday.

Freeman High School

After a dominant 5-0 start on the football field, the Mavericks find themselves on a two-game losing streak following a 27-13 loss to Hermitage (5-1) last Friday. The Mavs got an early 7-0 lead, when quarterback Jadyn Reece connected with tight end Max Vest on a six-yard touchdown pass. Trailing 20-7 with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, running back Ryan Bland made things interesting as he crossed the goal line from two yards out, making it a one-possession game. However, Hermitage would seal the deal with a 48-yard touchdown pass with three minutes remaining. The Mavs will look to turn things around versus Tucker (2-4) this Friday.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ football team fell to 4-2 on the season after a 21-13 loss to Varina (4-1) last weekend. With just less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Nana Utsey connected with Jevonte Winston on a 31-yard touchdown pass to give Glen Allen an early 7-0 lead. Following a Varina rushing touchdown and a valiant defensive effort by both teams, running back Dallas Chavis scored an 11-yard rushing touchdown, making it 13-7 Jags with just more than a minute left in the first half. Heading into the second half, the Jags would quickly see their lead vanish, as the Blue Devils scored a touchdown on a 41-yard punt return, making it 14-13. Five minutes later, Varina finished off the scoring for the night with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. The Jags will face a strong Hermitage team (5-1) in their next game this Friday.

Godwin High School

The Eagles’ football team fell to 5-2 on the season, following a 24-14 loss to the undefeated Thomas Jefferson Vikings (5-0) last Friday. Godwin was in control for the majority of the game, starting with quarterback Daniek Viener throwing a touchdown pass to Tucker Washburn at the end of the first quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, Viener found the endzone again, this time he used his legs, powering his way through the line from one yard out to take a 14-3 lead. It seemed as if victory was at hand for Godwin, but Thomas Jefferson managed to score three touchdowns in a matter of six minutes to make it 24-14 with just less than six minutes remaining in the game. Godwin will look to bounce back this Friday when it takes on Deep Run (1-6) on the road.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers won their fifth consecutive game last Friday, defeating a strong Freeman Mavericks team (5-2) 27-13. After Freeman got out to an early 7-0 lead, wide receiver Andre Clark Jr. caught a 21-yard touchdown to tie things up with one minute remaining in the first quarter. In the second quarter, running back Earlonte Winston extended the Panthers lead with a 50-yard rushing touchdown to give Hermitage a 13-7 lead at the end of the first half. Following a quarterback sneak for a touchdown, and a response from Freeman, the Panthers led 20-13 in the fourth. With three minutes remaining, Clark Jr. would haul in a 48-yard touchdown reception to close things out. Hermitage will face Glen Allen (4-2) in its next game this Friday.

Tucker High School

The Tigers’ football squad improved to 2-4 on the season after a 23-7 victory against Deep Run (1-6). After a slow start in the first half, Tucker picked things up and found a rhythm offensively. With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, quarterback Chase Roberts connected with Dennel Douglas on a 78-yard passing touchdown to give the Tigers a 10-7 lead. With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Roberts threw his second touchdown pass of the night to receiver Jaiden Blue from 24 yards out to extend the lead. Up 16-7 with just under one minute remaining in the game, running back Johnny Patrick powered his way into the endzone from two yards out to seal the deal. The Tigers will face the Freeman Mavericks (5-2) this Friday.

Varina High School

The Varina football team improved to 4-1 on the season following its 21-13 victory over Glen Allen (4-2) last weekend. The Blue Devils found themselves down 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. But the offense started to click early in the second. Running back Shaun Banks opened things up for Varina with a four-yard rushing touchdown to make it 7-7. After a Glen Allen rushing touchdown late in the second quarter, Varina finished the first half down 13-7. However, there was a massive momentum shift with eight minutes left in the third when the Blue Devils returned a punt 41 yards to the house, giving them their first lead of the night. Five minutes later, it was running back DaMari Carter scoring the run from 10 yards out to close out the scoring for the night. Varina will face a solid Hanover Hawks team (4-2) in its next game this Friday.
