The Deep Run girls’ volleyball team is now 15-0 this season after yet another 3-0 victory, this time over Godwin. The Wildcats are heavy favorites to win the state title this year and have been dominating their opponents all year long. Only four teams this year have been able to pull off a winning set against Deep Run (Atlee, Cosby, Hanover and James River). Every other game has been a 3-0 whitewash, with the Cats winning 45 of their 50 sets played. They will play their next three matches this week against Patrick Henry, Freeman and Tucker.

Douglas Freeman High School

The Mavericks’ football team (6-1) lost its first game of the season to a strong Hermitage team (5-3). The Mavs had strong efforts from a plethora of athletes offensively, starting with Miguel Martin and Cooper Speidell, who had rushing touchdowns from one yard out and four yards out, respectively. Kevin China ran for 65 yards on six carries, Ryan Bland ran for 60 yards on eight carries, and Jadyn Reece ran for 25 yards on seven carries to help bring Freeman’s rushing total to 157 yards on the night. Roddrey McWilliams led the team in receiving yards with 55 yards on just four catches. Jake Lohmann had 20 yards on three catches, and Cole Chizuk had a 23-yard reception. Freeman will look to get back in the win column this week when it hosts Tucker (2-5) Friday.

Freeman’s field hockey has been playing well lately, winning four out of its last six games to improve to 7-7 on the season. Against Glen Allen last week, senior captain A.C. Ferguson scored two goals on the night, assisted by Sarah Chilton and Avery Fonville. The Mavericks would lose in heartbreaking fashion though, as Elise Crowder of Glen Allen put the game away with a goal in double overtime to seal a 3-2 victory for the Jaguars.. Freeman got back in the win column later in the week with a 2-1 win against Maggie Walker. Chilton and Fonville each scored one goal apiece, and Chilton had one assist. The team will face Godwin (10-3) this week.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars football team fell to 3-4 on the season after a tough 20-7 loss to Potomac (3-4) last Friday. Potomac led 7-0 after the first quarter, and Xavier Moss answered the call with a one-yard rushing touchdown to tie things up for the Jaguars with just 1:09 remaining in the half. Glen Allen’s field hockey team is now on a winning streak after wins against Freeman (3-2) and Tucker (7-1). In their matchup against Freeman, Elise Crowder got the Jags on the board first, assisted by Ally Von Herbulis, with five minutes remaining in the first half. Freeman would score shortly after to make it 2-1 going into halftime. Freeman scored again in the third quarter to make it 2-2 and ultimately send the game into overtime. After two overtimes, Crowder scored her second goal of the game to secure the win, and improve the Jaguars’ record to 7-5 on the season after a string of very close losses that could have gone either way.

Just two days later, Glen Allen had a dominant performance against the Tigers. Leading the way was Von Herbulis, who had four goals, with one assisted by Ava Walker. Crowder’s lone goal of the day was the first of the day, assisted by Anna Threadgold. Maggie Leonard scored the second goal of the game, and Annabell Kiniry scored the Jags’ sixth goal of the game. The team is now 8-5 on the season and will play its next game on the road against Hermitage this week.

Henrico High School

The Henrico Warriors fell to 2-6 after a tough 12-7 loss to Mechanicsville (1-6). The Warriors held a 7-6 lead going into the third quarter, but allowed a Mustang touchdown late in the third. Henrico may have one of the hardest schedules to play, as far as the second half of the season goes. Its last six opponents have an overall record of 33-10. The Warriors will face Varina (7-0) this week and Hanover (6-2) in their final game.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers improved to 5-3 on the season with a promising win against Freeman (6-1) last week. Karon Burton had a phenomenal night all around with 229 yards of total offense, a passing touchdown and there rushing touchdowns (two of which came in the fourth quarter). On the receiving end of that first quarter passing touchdown from Burton was Chase Rivers. Jeremiah Coney also had a strong night, rushing for more than nine yards per carry, with a total of 65 yards on the ground. Burton's ability to make plays in both the air and, and the devastating combination of Burton's and Coney's rushing attack, makes the Panthers a difficult challenge for most opponents. The record of their remaining opponents is 4-11, making it very possible for the Panthers to win out heading into the playoffs. They will next face Godwin (3-4) on the road in an important match-up for both teams.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ football team is on a different level. After their 55-7 win over a previously 6-1 Hanover Hawks team, Highland Springs now has outscored its opponents 392-40, with half of those 40 points coming from their first game of the season. The story of the night was Takye Heath, who got the momentum going after a somewhat slow start for the Springers. Heath scored the first two touchdowns on the night, the first one on a 42-yard pass from quarterback Khristian Martin after facing fourth down and long, and the second coming on a scoop-and-score defensively just one minute later on Hanover’s first play of the drive. From that point on, it was the same old Springers, dominating in all phases of the game, while obliterating a top team in Hanover. Now 8-0, the Springers will have a well-earned bye week, then will prepare for their next home game against 2-5 Atlee.

J.R. Tucker High School

The boys’ volleyball team improved to 8-7 on the season after a huge comeback victory over the Freeman Mavericks. Freeman won the first two sets, 25-8 and 25-21, but with the match on the line, the Tigers pulled off a reverse sweep, winning set three 25-19, set four 25-23, and set five 15-6.

Varina High School

Varina remained undefeated this season after a 46-14 win over the Atlee Raiders (2-5).
