The Wildcats won the girls’ team title at the Class 5 state cross country championship, where they had five athletes finish within the top 30 in the individual rankings. Leading the way was Sidney Walters, who finished sixth overall with a time of 19:31. Julia Fabiato finished 17th overall with a time of 20:16; Janie Sanborn finished 24th overall with a time of 20:28; Hazel Wells was directly behind Sanborn with a time of 20:31; and finishing 27th overall was Ella Joy Jacobs with a time of 20:37.

Deep Run’s boys’ team finished sixth overall at the VHSL Class 5 state cross country championships last week. The team’s top finishers included junior runner Mark Vorster, with a time of 17:29 (25th overall); Joshua Bendura, who ran 17:44 (33rd overall); and Michael Tull (34th overall), with a time of 17:46.

Freeman High School

The Mavericks’ football team took care of business last week with a strong 24-10 victory over the Godwin Eagles. Kevin China dominated in the run game with an impressive 177 yards rushing on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Jadyn Reece completed six passes for 76 yards, ran for 15 yards, and had one passing touchdown to Jake Lohmann. Freeman is now 9-2 on the season and will face Highland Springs in the regional semifinal this Friday.

The Mavericks’ boys’ team placed third overall at the VHSL Class 5 state cross country championships. Top finishers included senior Brett Bishop, who placed fifth overall in the individual standings with a time of 16:41; Blair Bishop, who placed 18th overall with a time of 17:11l; freshman Aidan Cassidy, who finished 28th overall with a time of 17:31; and sophomore Ian Gilstrap, who finished 31st overall with a time of 17:37.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars boys’ cross country squad won the VHSL Class 5 state cross country championship title last week with multiple athletes placing within the top 15 in the individual standings. Leading the way was senior Ben Hagerich, who placed third overall at the meet with a time of 16:33. Carson Rackley placed eighth overall with a time of 16:48; Eric Fagan placed 10th overall with a time of 16:51; and Dorian Frick finished 13th overall with a time of 16:57.

On the girls’ side, the Jaguars placed third overall as a team, with six athletes placing within the top 35 of the individual standings. Their top finisher was Tessa Dobrinski, who placed 10th overall with a time of 19:53. Annie Ripol finished 12th overall with a time of 20:01; and cracking the top 15 was Sofi Varon with a time of 20:23. Megan Cash (20:47), Kayla Boughton (20:48) and Reagan Walters (20:56) placed 32nd, 33rd and 35th, respectively.

The Jaguars’ football team pulled off not only a tremendous upset, but also a tremendous fourth quarter comeback, defeating Midlothian 29-25 in a first-round playoff game. The comeback started at the beginning of the fourth when they were down 25-7. Nana Utsey scored on an eight-yard touchdown run with just under 10 minutes left, then quarterback Andrew Milwit connected with Ford Michelow on a 60-yard touchdown pass to make it a one-possession game. Running back Will Noel finished things off for Glen Allen with a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 29-25 with just more than one minute left in the game. The Jags are now 6-5 on the season and will move on to play L.C Bird in the regional Ssemifinals this Friday.

Godwin High School

Berkley Nance of Godwin had a phenomenal day at the VHSL Class 5 state cross country championships, running a time of 16:12 to win the individual state title as a sophomore.

The Godwin football team lost in its regional quarterfinal game last week to the Freeman Mavericks, 24-10. The first score of the game for the Eagles came on a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter by kicker Dominic Williams. The Mavs’ lone touchdown of the game came from linebacker Sam Jared, who returned an interception 42 yards to the house. Quarterback Logan Rhoades also had a solid performance on the ground, with 82 rushing yards on 20 carries. Freeman finished the season with a record of 6-5.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers’ football team saw its season end last week after a loss to the L.C Bird Skyhawks, 23-15. Corey Morton ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and quarterback Karon Burton ran for 43 yards on 10 carries and a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Hermitage. The offense had a total of 113 rushing yards between Burton, Morton and running back Jeremiah Coney (nine carries for 20 yards). The Panthers finished the year 6-5.

Junior Quinn Green of Hermitage had a solid showing at the Class 5 state cross country championships last week, finishing 43rd overall with a time of 17:58.

Aryssa McClanan finished 44th overall on the girls’ side with a time of 21:16.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers improved to 11-0 on the season on the gridiron and punched a ticket to a regional semifinal game against the Freeman Mavericks after defeating the Prince George Royals in a 49-0 shutout victory. Aziz Foster Powell averaged an astonishing 34 yards (102 yards total) per carry on the night and scored two touchdowns, while Eli Williams, Eric Byrd, Noah Jenkins and Javon Robinson each had a rushing touchdown. Receiver Takye Heath had a touchdown reception from quarterback Khristian Martin.

Varina High School

The Varina football program improved to 10-1 this season after a dominant 35-0 win over Matoaca in the first round of the playoffs. Quarterback Myles Derricott threw three touchdowns on the day to three different targets. North Carolina commit Kaveion Keys, Eric Smith and LJ Booker each had a touchdown reception, while running back Tae’mon Brown ran for 100 yards on seven carries and had two rushing touchdowns. Varina will move on to play King George on the road in its regional semifinal matchup this Friday.

Junior runner Jillian Sisk placed 71st overall at the VHSL Class 4 state cross country championships with a time of 22:00.
