Deep Run High School

With only 11 wrestlers competing, the Wildcats’ wrestling squad finished second overall at the Warrior Stampede Tournament. Of their 11 competitors, four competitors took home titles. Ajay Pai won the 106-pound class, Jerry Simon won the 125-ponud class, David Simon won the 132-pound class, and Cameron McKay won the 150-pound class. Other finishers included Matt David, who finished fourth overall in the 215-pound class; Nicholas Gagliardi, who finished fourth in the HWT class; and Drayton Moore, who finished seventh in the 120-pound class.

Freeman High School

Sophomore standouts Joseph Winston and Charlie White both were selected to the 2022 All-Metro Golf Team’s second team. With two years of eligibility left, they give the Mavs’ a lot to look forward to in their program’s future.

Freeman’s boys’ basketball team has started its season off with a 1-1 record. The team lost in its season opener to St. Christopher’s, 67-47, and won its second game against Tucker, 51-47. Its next game will be against Collegiate (1-1) on Tuesday.

The girls’ basketball team started 1-2, defeating Atlee in its season opener, 47-42, before falling to Henrico (46-31) and Powhatan (42-38). The Mavs will face Maggie Walker (2-0) in their next game on Tuesday.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ boys’ basketball team opened its season with a 52-49 win over Patrick Henry (0-2). The Jags were led by Jordan Brown, who scored 17 points, and Kris Tiller, who totaled 13 points. The Jags will go on the road to face Midlothian (0-1) in their next matchup.

The girls’ basketball team got off to a quick 2-0 start, defeating Patrick Henry 59-25, and Cosby 50-48. In the win over Cosby, Cierra McGinlay led the team with 17 points. Lindsey Shoulder and Sydney Worsham also had highly productive nights with 14 points and 9 points, respectively. The Jags will face Deep Run (0-1) in their next game on Friday.

Softball standout Peyton Simmons announced her college decision last week, committing to continue her career at Longwood University in Farmville.

Godwin High School

The Eagles track team is off to a great start of the season with multiple athletes producing top ten marks in the state of Virginia for the 60m Dash. Nicholas Clark ran a time of 7.41, good enough for sixth overall in the state. Sophomore Iesa Abdul-qudoos ran a time of 7.45 which is currently the 8th fastest time in the state, and Callum Dotson ran a personal best of 7.62 which is good enough for 10th overall in Virginia.

Henrico High School

The Warriors’ boys’ basketball lost their season opener last week to the Hermitage Panthers, 75-72. In a game that seemed to be out of hand for the Warriors (down 28-16 at the half), they bounced back to make things interesting with a 45-42 lead with 6:54 left in the fourth quarter. With 1:25 left in the fourth, the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, but power forward Shamon Rosser was able to tie things up with a free throw to send the game into overtime. Hermitage ended up securing the win from the free throw line. The Warriors will play their next game on the road against Hanover (2-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Highland Springs

For the sixth time in the past eight years, the Springers will advance to the Class 5 state football hampionship, after defeating the two-time defending state champion Stone Bridge (12-2) 19-14. Quarterback Khristian Martin had three total touchdowns and 221 total yards, with his lone passing touchdown going to Caron Ferguson from 25 yards out. Jakyre Henley was relentless all game, rushing for 92 yards on just four carries and catching two passes for 68 yards. Aziz Foster-Powell also had a big night on the ground, rushing for 85 yards on 16 carries. Braylon Johnson changed the momentum of the game with two key interceptions on the day to keep Stone Bridge off of the field and secure the victory. The Springers will play Maury Commodores (10-1) in the Class 5 title game Dec. 10 at Old Dominion University.

Tucker High School

Tucker’s track and field team is off to a strong start this indoor season, producing some of the region’s best marks during a plethora of events at St. Christopher’s School. Senior sprinter Jacob Mayland ran a personal best of 6.78 in the 55-meter dash to place third overall, while junior Damien Graham finished right behind Mayland with a time of 6.86. In the 500-meter dash, freshman Victor Ma finished fifth overall with a time of 1:16.40, and sophomore Conner Tu finished sixth overall in 1:17.31.

Varina High School

The Blue Devils’ track and field team had an impressive performance at the St. Christopher’s School event, as well. Senior thrower Kyree Currie threw the shot put 47 feet 3 inches to win and take the early season state lead. Jayden Ivey placed sixth overall in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.89 and ninth overall in the 300-meter dash with a time of 41.02. Distance runner Amari Williams finished third overall in the 1000-meter with a time of 3:06.89, which is a personal best and is currently the eighth best time in the state of Virginia.
