Deep Run’s boys and girls soccer programs had an impressive week, each taking home the Region 5C titles. They’ll both now compete for a state title. For the girls, Gianna Chrapek led the team in scoring with two goals within one minute of each other, while Ava LeGault, Lily Rolling and Monique McEnhimer each scored one goal to help the Cats defeat Freeman 5-0. Their next game will be versus Stone Bridge (15-5) in the state quarterfinals. On the boys’ side, it was a hard fought game by both the Wildcats and the Freeman Mavericks, but Zach Casey was the difference-maker, scoring the team's lone goal early in the second half to secure the regional title. Deep Run’s next game will be a quarterfinal matchup against Riverside (18-2-1) this week.

Freeman High School

Freeman’s baseball squad finished up another strong season. They finished 19-5 as the Region 5C runners-up and made the state tournament for the second straight year. Against Godwin in the regional final, Miguel Martin led the way for the Mavs, scoring two runs, and a double that resulted in a run for Cross Kingsbury. Ultimately, the Eagles bounced back in the seventh inning and secured the regional title in a back-and-forth, 6-5 game. Against Independence in the state quarterfinal, Ryder Warren led the way in hitting, going 2 for 3 with one double. Martin had another strong performance, going 1 for 4, with his line hit bringing in Roddrey McWilliams for the team’s lone score.

Glen Allen High School

Glen Allen’s girls track and field squad took home the VHSL Class 5 outdoor championship last weekend, edging out L.C Bird by six points. Elly Velasquez led the Jags with a state title in the 3200-meter run and a bronze medal in the 1600-meter run. In the pole vault, the team reeled in 18 of the 39 available points for the event. Emily Romano won the state title with a jump of 12 feet, 6 inches, while Morgan Pietruszkiewicz finished fourth and Maddie Walsh finished sixth. In the throws, Mackenzie Blanchet had a strong performance, finishing as the bronze medalist in the discus with a throw of 117 feet, 10 inches and finished fourth in the shot put, heaving it out to 36 feet, half an inch.

Godwin High School

The Eagles’ baseball squad has been rolling in its regional and state playoff matchups, and will now play in the state semifinals versus Cox (21-3). In their 8-0 win versus Riverbend in the state quarterfinals, the Eagles were led by Luke Smyers, Hank Piersol and Conner Smith, who combined on a shutout. Smyers led the team with nine strikeouts in four innings, while Piersol struck out two batters in three innings, and Smith struck out two in the seventh inning. At the plate, seniors Cole Powers and Garrett Mason had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Juice Tobin, Dylan Hudson and Caelan Funk each had hits and RBIs.

Hermitage High School

Senior runner Quinn Green had a strong day at the VHSL Class 5 outdoor track and field championships last week. Green took home the state title in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:18.39 and finished as the state runner-up in the 800-meter run, crossing the line at 1:57.76. While Green was busy dominating the distance events on the track, his teammate Uriah Harris took care of business in the throws. Harris finished as the state runner up in the shot put, throwing a personal best of 54 feet and then took home the bronze medal in the discus, throwing another personal best of 159 feet, 8 inches.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ track and field squads saw two athletes take home individual state titles. For the girls, it was Pryncess Jackson doing Pryncess Jackson things, which is winning titles. Jackson won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.22 seconds. She also won the state title in the triple jump with another personal best of 39 feet, 7.5 inches, then finished as the state runner-up in the high jump and finished sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. Jackson scored 31 of Highland Springs’ 37 points, which was good enough for a sixth-place team finish. On the boys’ side, sophomore Kendric Curry won his second state title of the calendar year, jumping an outdoor personal best of 14 feet, 6 inches, which was one foot higher than the state runner up.

Tucker High School

Tucker’s track and field squads had some impressive performances at the VHSL outdoor state championships this past weekend, including an individual state champion. Junior Mariah Jameson finished eighth in the 200-meter dash prelims, then took home the state title, finishing with a time of 24.95 seconds. Jameson also finished as the bronze medalist in the 400-meter dash. On the boys’ side, senior Noah Logan (who entered the season late) finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 44 feet, 7.25 inches and also finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.
