Deep Run High School

The Wildcats’ track and field program had some solid performances last week. Junior thrower Jahleel Miller won the Atlee Polar Bear no. 2 meet with a throw of 47 feet. Sophomore runner Finn Hubbert won the 1000-meter with a personal best time of 2:39.36. Hubbert is now ranked eighth in the Region 5B standings this winter in that event. Junior pole vaulter Vassilos Ringas placed fourth in the Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University with a personal best of 10 feet and is now tied with Xavier Curry of Highland Springs and Connor Teague of Atlee for fiifth place in the Region 5B standings.

Freeman High School

The Mavericks’ wrestling squad had a strong showing at the Arrowhead Invitational this past weekend. Will Ames and Wyatt Giddings placed fifth, Reid Garnett placed fourth, Bridger Giddings and Braden Sweeney placed third, Jackson Rogish and Darian Llorens finished as runners-up, and Luke Liberatore won the meet to give the Mavs a sixth-place finish in the final team standings.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ basketball squads have continued to show why they are front runners for a potential state championship run. The boys have won eight of their last nine games, recently defeating Deep Run (4-13) 62-57. Kris Tiller led the way with 15 points, and Jordan Brown was close behind with 12 points, while Ford Michelow scored eight. The Jaguars will face Clover Hill (4-12) on the road for their next matchup. The girls improved to 15-0 last week after defeating John Marshall 47-34 and Deep Run 44-39. The Jags have been led by senior guard Cierra McGinlay, who is ranked 14th in the state in scoring with 19.5 points per game and 10th in three pointers made with 32. Glen Allen will face Henrico (11-6) on the road next.

Will Noel, Jr. (an all-region and all-metro selection at running back) made his college decision last week, opting to continue his academic and athletic career at West Virginia State.

Godwin High School

The Eagles’ boys’ basketball team improved to 13-5 on the season. After losing three games in a row, Godwin bounced back last week, defeating Louisa County 74-57, Tucker 59-36 and Freeman 49-38. The Eagles will look to keep this momentum going in their next matchup versus Thomas Jefferson (8-9). On the girls’ side, the Eagles are now 12-6 after winning two straight, against Tucker and Freeman. They also will face Thomas Jefferson in their next game on the road this week.

Henrico High School

The Henrico girls’ basketball team has shown some major improvement this season. Last year, it posted a record of 11-10 and was ranked 30th in the Class 4 rankings. This winter, the team already has accumulated the amount of wins from last year after improving to 11-6 with a 56-32 victory over Armstrong (4-10). The win has it now ranked 16th in Class 4. It was all Shayla Wyatt in the team’s most recent victory over Armstrong; she put together yet another triple-double this season. Wyatt scored 22 points, had 11 rebounds and 11 steals. The Warriors will face one of the top teams in the state in Glen Allen (15-0) next.

Hermitage High School

Junior wrestler Davion Clarke has been having himself a strong season in the 215-pound weight class. Clarke recently finished second overall at the Prince George tournament and finished second overall at the Henrico tournament this past weekend. He will have an opportunity to win a district championship this week.

The basketball programs of Hermitage High School have both been playing like championship contenders this year. The boys improved to 12-5 last week after defeating Deep Run (4-13) 65-61, and Tucker (0-18) 69-53. The Panthers will face Freeman (6-13) and Glen Allen (12-4) in their two matchups this week. On the girls’ side, the Panthers are now 11-4 this season after defeating Tucker (2-16) 50-20 last Friday. This week, they will be tested by multiple top teams in the state. On Wednesday, they will face Highland Springs (13-4), and on Friday they will face Glen Allen (15-0).

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ boys’ basketball team improved to 11-6 on the season with its most recent victory over Western Branch (9-6) by a score of 66-60. After starting the season 4-4, the defending state champions have won seven of their last nine games. The Springers will face off against Hanover (10-8) at home in their next game.

Sophomore pole vaulter Kendric Curry continued his dominant season at the Bulldog Invitational at Liberty University this past weekend. Curry posted a new personal best mark of 14 feet, 6 inches, winning the meet by half a foot. His mark is currently first in Region 5B, first in Class 5 and fourth in all of Virginia.

Varina High School

The Blue Devils’ boys basketball squad continues to dominate. The Devils currently are on a five-game winning streak and improved to 13-2 after their most recent 61-46 victory over L.C. Bird (11-6). Kennard Wyche Jr. led the way with 25 points. Malachi Cosby also had a solid performance with 10 points on the day, and Myles Derricott scored nine points. Varina will face off against Atlee (9-8) on its home court next.

The track and field team had a nice showing at the Atlantic Coast HS Last Chance meet this past weekend. Junior sprinter Eric Smith ran a new personal best time of 6.51 in the 55-meter dash to win the meet, and tied Glen Allen’s Xavier Moss for the Region 5B lead in the event. Senior thrower Kyree Currie placed third overall in the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 3.75 inches and is still ranked third in Region 5B this winter.
