Wildcats’ football standout Jayson Morgan announced his college decision last week, committing to continue his academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech. He was recruited as a preferred walk on and has massive potential thanks to his 6-foot-9, 270-pound frame.

Freeman High School

The Mavs’ boys’ basketball team went 1-2 at the Henrico Holiday Tournament last weekend. The Mavs lost to Atlee, 57-44, in their first game, then bounced back to win their next game in the consolation bracket, 58-50 over Deep Run. In the fifth-place game, they fell to Fairfax, 59-45, finishing sixth overall. Freeman is now 4-7 on the season and will face Glen Allen (6-3) in its next matchup.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ boys’ basketball team is now 6-3 on the year after going 1-2 at the Henrico Holiday Tournament. The Jags lost the opening game of the tournament, 66-48 to St. Christopher’s, then dropped a 56-45 contest to Fairfax (7-2), before rebounding to topple Deep Run, 63-51.

Godwin High School

The Eagles’ boys’ basketball team had a solid showing at the Tri City Holiday Classic. Godwin lost its first game against Monacan, falling 54-51 despite 18 points (including four three-pointers) from multi-sport athlete Logan Rhoades. Against Thomas Jefferson, Rhoades led the team in points once again with 23. Daniel Kogh and Sean Smith also had strong performances, with 12 and 11 points, respectively. In the fifth place game, the Eagles fell to Dinwiddie 68-61 in overtime. They are now 9-2 going into 2023 and will face Deep Run (1-7) in their next game.

Henrico High School

The Warriors’ boys basketball team came up short of its championship goals as the host team in the Henrico Holiday Tournament last week. In its first game, the team defeated Freeman (4-7), 50-45, to qualify for the semifinal round. There, it fell to Atlee (6-3), 62-60, in a tight game, before losing a battle of the Warriors to Matoaca (6-1), 82-73, to finish fourth. Tykie Jones of Henrico was selected to the all-tourney team for his exceptional play throughout the rounds. Henrico (4-6) will face Mechanicsville (1-5) in its next game.

Highland Springs High School

Football standout Malik Morrow received an offer from Shenandoah University, an NCAA Division III program competing in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Morrow had an outstanding season, earning All-Region 5C honors at defensive end.

The Springers’ track and field squad had a number of top performances at the F.I.A Holiday Indoor Classic in Virginia Beach. Dewan Green placed sixth overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.13; Kendric Curry placed second in the pole vault with a jump of 13 feet 6 inches, which was just half an inch off his lifetime best from his fifth-place jump at the Adidas Outdoor National Championship last spring; and Micheal Hamlin placed fourth overall in the long jump, with a distance of 19 feet 5 inches, his second-best jump of the season. On the girls side, junior jumpers Madison Greene and Trenaye Collier finished in the top eight in the triple jump, with marks of 33 feet 0.25 inches and 32 feet, 11.75 inches, respectively.

Tucker High School

The Tigers’ girls basketball team won two of its three games at the Ville Holiday classic last week. The team earned third-place honors after a 51-44 victory over King William (3-4) and will face Deep Run (1-5) in its next game.

Varina High School

Senior standout thrower Kyree Currie placed second overall in the boys shot put with a throw of 46 feet 5.75 inches at the F.I.A Holiday Indoor Classic in Virginia Beach. This season, Currie has thrown a personal best of 47 feet 3 inches, which is second among all throwers in Region B this year.
