Deep Run High School

The Wildcats’ girls basketball team improved to 2-5 on the year after an impressive showing at the Highland Springs holiday tournament, making it to the championship round against the Springers, where they would fall 51-34 to one of the top teams in the state. The Wildcats will face Tucker (1-5) in their next matchup.

Freeman High School

Jason Abbey, an All-Region 5C selection at defensive end in football, announced that he will continue his academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech. Teammate Conner Hilemn is also gaining attention in his recruitment, and received an in-state offer from Shenandoah University, an NCAA Division III program that competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The Mavericks’ boys’ and girls’ basketball programs have shown a lot of improvement over the past week. The boys improved to 3-5 after their 68-58 victory over Banner Christian (6-4) and have won two of their last three games. The girls have improved to 4-5 and are now on a two game winning streak after defeating Thomas Jefferson (0-12) 52-12, and Banner Christian (2-5) 66-13. They will face a strong Glen Allen team (5-0) in their next matchup.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ boys’ basketball team had a strong showing at the Highland Springs Holiday Tournament, finishing third overall. The Jags’ won their first game against Church Hill Academy, 81-30, as Kris Tiller led both teams with 31 points, while Faron Friend, Jackson Prescott and Chris Dopp had eight points apiece. They then lost their first game of the year, against Manchester, 72-65, but rebounded to win the third place game against Thomas Jefferson, 62-47. Kris Tiller led the way once again with 16 points and 6 assists, while Kam Tiller was right behind with 15 points and four steals, and Jordan Brown finished the game with eight points and an impressive 11 rebounds.

Godwin High School

Logan Rhoades, an All-Region 5C football selection, announced that he will continue his education and athletic career at Colgate College, an NCAA Division 1 institution in the Patriot League.

The Eagles’ girls’ basketball team got itself back in the win column, snapping a two-game losing streak with a 43-33 victory over Colonial Forge (1-5) to improve to 6-2 on the year. The team will face Charlottesville (5-1) on the road next.

Henrico High School

The Warriors’ girls’ basketball team improved to 4-3 the season after a strong showing versus Steward (7-3) where they fell 58-54 in an absolute nail biter. Shayla Wyatt led the team in scoring with 19 points. Sanaa Moore and McKenzie Wiggins also had strong performances with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. The 4-3 start has the Warriors currently ranked ninth in Virginia Class 4.

Hermitage High School

Six-foot-three, 210-pound defensive end D’ahmon Artis received a football scholarship offer from Seton Hill, an NCAA Division II program in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

The Panthers’ boys’ basketball team had a great showing at the 804 Coaches for Change Community Classic, winning the Unity bracket championship. They defeated Collegiate 51-49, and Henrico 68-55 in the championship round, improving to 6-2 on the year.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ boys’ basketball team is now 3-3 on the year after its most recent loss, to Norview in the Iverson Holiday Showcase last week. Despite that loss, there were plenty of great performances for the defending state champions. Leading the way was Danzelle Coles, who paced the team in points with a total of 23 on the night and had six rebounds and three assists. Ezekiel Birchette had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, and Jabari Thompson led the team in rebounds with 10.

The girls’ team has been on fire lately, improving to 6-2 on the year on the strength of a five-game winning streak that included winning the Highland Springs High School Holiday Hoops Tournament. The Springers defeated Deep Run 51-34 in the championship round, and junior Ah’Kiyah Pye took home tourney MVP honors.

Varina High School

Football standout Marcus Vincent announced his college decision last week and will continue his football career at Furman University, an NCAA Division 1 institution located in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Blue Devils’ boys’ basketball team has been nothing short of dominant this season, showing early signs of a potential state title defense. The Devils are on a five-game winning streak and have improved to 6-1 on the year after their victories over independence (62-33) and South Mecklenburg (69-46) last week. Kennard Wyche Jr. is playing lights-out this season, averaging 20 points, three rebounds and four assists per game. Steven Stinson Jr. is averaging 12 points per game, while Myles Derricott is averaging 10 and Joshua Hughes is leading the team in rebounds with six per game. Their early success has the Blue Devils currently ranked second in Virginia Class 4 and 18th in Virginia. Their next game will be on the road versus Atlee (4-3).
