The Deep Run wrestling squad put together quite the impressive week. The Wildcats currently sit at 6-0 on the season in head to head matches, recently defeating Godwin High School 36-33, and following that up with another win against Freeman High School while being down multiple starters. This past weekend, the Wildcats competed in The Beast of the East tournament (the biggest wrestling tournament on the East Coast) and finished with a team record of 9-8. Cameron McKay was the top finisher for the team with a record of 3-2 and advanced to day two of the competition, where he made the round of 16. Jerry Simon finished with a record of 3-2, scoring three pins for the Wildcats. David Simon went 2-2, and Nick Gagliardi went 1-2 in the heavyweight class, securing a big win in the first championship round. This team has dominated so far in 2022, and will look to compete for a regional and state in the new year.

Freeman High School

The Mavs’ wrestling team had an impressive day at the Mechanicsville Holiday Wrestling Tournament, with a total of seven athletes placing within the top eight of their respective weight classes. Luke Liberatore was the top finisher for the Mavs, placing second overall. Brey Loving finished third, Braden Sweeney finished fourth, Butter Stephenson finished fifth, Darien Llorens finished sixth, and Colten Jacoby and Jackson Rogish both finished seventh.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ field hockey team had three athletes named to the All-Metro team for the 2022 season. Sophomore right forward Ally Von Herbulis made the second team, while Kendall Von Herbulis and Elise Crowder were honorable mention selections.

The Jaguars’ girls basketball team continues to thrive this season, starting off with a strong 5-0 record. Last week, the team rolled in two games to put the entire state on notice, defeating Grassfield 61-29 Friday, then one day later topping Franklin County (6-3) by a score of 58-31. After their win over Franklin County, the Jaguars are ranked second in all of Virginia Class 5. They will host Freeman (3-5) next.

Godwin High School

After starting the season 5-0, the Eagles’ girls’ basketball team lost their past two games to Mechanicsville, 56-46, and an undefeated Hermitage team, 53-43. In their most recent game against Hermitage, Reagan Nemeyer led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points, while Katie Honaker put up 10 points. Their 5-2 record still has them in the top five of Virginia Class 5, and they will look to snap their losing streak against Colonial Forge (1-2) this week.

On the boys side, the Eagles have exhibited nothing short of complete dominance. They defeated Mechanicsville (1-4) by a score of 57-2 and defeated a strong Hermitage team, 62-54. Their undefeated record is good enough for 21st in all of Virginia, and they are currently ranked third in Virginia Class 5. The Eagles will face Monacan (3-3) next.

Henrico High School

The Warriors’ boys’ basketball team had a strong showing at the Crockett Classic Tournament last week, making it all the way to the championship round against the Hopewell Blue Devils (6-2). Despite a 55-50 loss to Hopewell, Henrico had great performances from multiple athletes. Leading the way was Xavier Sauls, who had 18 points on the day. Jaden Walker had 12 points and Shamon Rosser put together 10 points for the Warriors, who are now 3-3 on the year and will host Meadowbrook (2-2) in their next game.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers’ girls basketball team improved to 6-0 after defeating Godwin (5-2), 53-43. Jayda Thomas led all scorers on the night with 15 points, while Breyona Robinson scored 13 points and had seven steals. They will look to keep their unblemished record alive against a strong opponent in L.C. Bird (4-1) in their next game this week. The boys’ squad fell to 4-2 after a 46-43 loss to Freeman (3-5), and a 62-54 loss to Godwin (8-0). Their 4-2 record currently has them ranked 17th in Virginia Class 5, and they will face Collegiate (2-4) at home next.

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ girls’ basketball team improved to 2-2 on the season after a dominant 98-21 victory against Atlee (1-4) last Thursday, snapping a two game losing streak. The girls will look to carry this momentum into their next game against Covenant (3-1) this week.

On the boys’ side, the defending state champions fell to 2-1 after a 66-54 loss to Patriot (4-1). They will host Thomas Jefferson (3-1) next.

Varina High School

The Varina boys’ basketball team improved to 4-1 this season with a big 79-49 win over the Hanover Hawks (4-1). Kennard Wyche Jr. led the way for the Blue Devils with an impressive 32 points, five three-pointers, four assists and three rebounds in just three quarters of play. Malachi Cosby had a double-double, with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Joshua Hughes and Kylek Harris also had solid performances with 10 points each. The Blue Devils will go on the road for their next matchup against the Independence Patriots (6-3) this week.
