The Deep Run varsity football team is off to a solid 1-1 start, already leaps and bounds ahead of where it was last season. In their most recent game against Atlee, the Wildcats were led by Jahleel Miller, who ran for 97 yards on 19 carries, Quarterback Trey Gauch who connected with wide receiver Colby Taylor for a 35-yard touchdown, and sophomore Brian Teber punched in a 3-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats will face off against Henrico next.

The defending region Class 5C state field hockey champions are on a roll this season, currently undefeated at 3-0. The Wildcats defeated Prince George in their season opener 2-1, then won 2-1 against Maggie Walker and 3-1 against Godwin. In that game, Addie Morley, Kelsey MacAleese and Bryce Maxey each scored while Ella Fallen took care of things defensively with 13 saves on the day. The team will travel to Freeman for its next game.

The five-time state champions in volleyball under coach Kevin Pond are on a roll again this year. Pond won the 300th game of his 15-year coaching career Aug. 23 against Hanover, with a 3-0 victory. Will Pond win his sixth state title this year? Anything appears possible under his leadership.

Freeman High School
Mavericks running back Miguel Martin averaged an astounding 21 yards per carry while producing 172 yards of total offense and 3 touchdowns in leading Freeman to a 34-10 win against James River in their varsity football game Friday. Freeman is 2-0 this season and will play Mechanicsville this week.
Sarah Clinton, Liza Haymore, and Margaret Shepardson each had one goal and one assist, while Emily Carver had a goal and two assists in leading the Mavericks to a 7-0 win against Hermitage in their varsity field hockey game last Wednesday. Their win puts them at 3-1 on the season, and they’ll face Deep Run next.

The Mavericks’ boys and girls volleyball seasons are off to strong starts, with records of 3-1 and 2-2, respectively. The boys are on a two-game win streak, defeating Henrico (3-1) and Freeman (3-2). The boys will play Tucker next. The girls lost their most recent match to Godwin, 3-1, ending their two-game win streak that included victories against Mechanicsville (3-0) and Freeman (3-0). The girls will look to bounce back against Collegiate this week.

Glen Allen High School
Will Noel and Adrien Mosley, teammates who have both received offers from Christopher Newport University, have been playing fantastic this season on both sides of the ball. Versus Matoaca, Noel ran for 71 yards, 2 touchdowns and had 2 tackles for loss, while Mosley had 5 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Versus Varina, Noel had 5 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 1 sack. Mosley had 58 yards, 4 receptions and 5 tackles versus the Blue Devils. The Jaguars will host Patrick Henry this week.

The Jaguars' field hockey team has not allowed a goal all season, and has started off the year with a 3-0 record. They defeated Hanover 1-0, Matoaca 6-0 and Maggie Walker 2-0. In their most recent game, the Jaguars had goals from Elise Crowder in the first quarter, and Ally Von Herbulis in the third quarter. Ally Von Herbulis has been on fire this season, who has recorded 3 goals and 3 assists so far this year. The Jaguars will face off against Godwin next.

The defending state champions in boys Volleyball are off to a 2-0 start this season. Their most recent matchup was against the legendary Deep Run Wildcats program, but the Jaguars delivered with a 3-0 win. Andrew Onusconich had 10 kills and 2 blocks, while Alem Duncak had 9 kills for Glen Allen, keeping their undefeated season alive.

Godwin High School
The football team has started their season off by splitting its first two games. Quarterback Daniel Viener led the Eagles to their first win of the season with two passing touchdowns during a 20-7 win against Kecoughtan. Following their loss to Patrick Henry, the Eagles look forward to their next matchup versus a 1-1 Atlee team this week.

Field hockey started off the year with a record of 2-1, defeating Patrick Henry 2-0 and Hermitage 10-0 before falling just short against Deep Run, 3-1. The team’s next game will be at home against the 3-0 Glen Allen Jaguars this week.
Matkins Milligan has been scorching the fairways this season for the Eagles golf team. Milligan was a medalist in each of the team’s first three victories, leading the Eagles to wins against Freeman (301 to 304), Grassfield and Hickory with a score of 290, and Glen Allen (152-172).

Henrico High School
The Warriors football team has a record of 1-1. Calvin Sanders led his team to a season opener win against Atlee, 19-17, rushing for 104 yards on nine carries, with two touchdowns. Sean Macon also scored on a 7-yard rushing touchdown to seal the deal for Henrico. The Warriors followed up their win with a loss to Patrick Henry last week, but Sanders managed to find the end zone again on a 12-yard rushing TD early in the first quarter. Henrico is preparing for Deep Run this week.

Hermitage High School
Appalachian State football commit Jeremiah Coney ran for 77 yards and three touchdowns last week week, leading the Panthers to a 51-14 win against the Henrico Warriors. Coney fumbled early in the first quarter, which set up Henrico for a 7-0 lead, but his ability to forget that early play and to lead his team with a dominant night showed his powerful mindset. Hermitage is 2-0 on the season and will take on Thomas Dale this week.

Highland Springs High School
Describing Jakyre Henley as a great football player might be a massive understatement. Henley can throw the ball, run it, catch it and return punts – wherever you would like him to be, he seemingly will deliver. In Highland Springs’ most recent game, Henley led the Springers to a 48-7 victory against Manchester with three touchdowns on the night. He ran three times for 55 yards and two touchdowns and took a punt return 65 yards to the house as well. The defending state champion Springers are again putting everyone on notice, winning their first two games in dominant fashion. They will play Prince George this week.

J.R. Tucker High School
The Tigers Football team is 1-1, with a victory against Caroline 14-13, and a loss last week to Indian River, 35-12. In their first home game in more than three years, Tucker celebrated with a comeback victory in their season opener against Caroline. The Tigers blocked a punt, returning it for a touchdown, and punched in a two-point conversion with 8:41 to go in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes of the game, the Tigers recovered Caroline’s fumble on the 1-yard-line, then scored on a run from Kobby Owusu shortly thereafter, securing the win with just 26 seconds remaining in the game. In their game against Indian River, Tigers’ quarterback Kobby Owusu connected with Dom Harris for a 49-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, then connected with Camron Williams for an 80-yard score later on. The Tigers’ next opponent will be Meadowbrook.
Tucker’s field hockey team has started off its season 3-1, with wins against Hermitage (4-0), Henrico (6-0) and Highland Springs (6-0). Their only loss came in a 3-1 decision against Freeman in their third game of the year. The Tigers will again face Hermitage this week.

Varina High School
University of North Carolina commit Kaveion Keys was the key player in Varina’s 29-7 win against Glen Allen last week. Keys produced two receiving touchdowns and two sacks, playing at a high level on both sides of the ball. Naseer Smith and Tae’mon Brown also had solid performances, each scoring a touchdown. The defending state champion Blue Devils are undefeated this year at 2-0 and will face fellow undefeated foe Hermitage this week in another early season showdown.
