The Wildcats’ softball squad has improved to 6-6 on the season after an impressive 4-2 stretch from April 11-26. Most recently, the Cats beat Freeman 11-1 and lost 5-0 to King William last week. Against Freeman, Alana Collier led the way, going 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs. Jessica Kolkhorst went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Gabby Chrapek went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Teagan Baulsir, Reese Roberson, Emily Plank, Lily Zehmer and Charlotte Boswell each had hits versus the Mavs. Against King William, Baulsir went 1 for 2 with one double, Chrapek went 1 for 3 with one double, and Hope Tate pitched six innings and tallied five strikeouts. The Wildcats next will take on Midlothian (7-8) on the road Monday at 6 p.m.

Freeman High School

The boys’ lacrosse team won a hard-fought game against Deep Run (5-4) last Thursday, 9-8, to improve to 8-2 this season. Charlie Bernhardt got things started with a goal in the second quarter to put the Mavs up 4-3 going into halftime. Down 5-4 in the third quarter, they responded with a Thomas Radar goal to tie things up at five. Then it was Zack Stewart who knocked in a goal to start the fourth quarter to give his team a 6-5 lead, and Bernhardt scored another goal shortly thereafter to extend the lead to 8-6. Deep Run was resilient though, and ultimately tied the game up at eight, but with just minutes left in the game, Stewart sealed the deal with his second goal of the game. The Mavs will face James River (3-3) in their next game.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ softball squad improved to 9-1 on the season after a dominant 10-0 victory over Maggie Walker last week. Grace Tharp had an outstanding day on the mound to lead the Jags to their third straight victory, allowing no hits or runs, while striking our eight. At the plate, it was Maeve Haun who led the way. Haun had a perfect 3 for 3 day, scoring three runs, hitting one double and stealing two bases. Alyssa Meharg went 2 for 3, also scoring three runs along with one RBI and a stolen base. Samantha Horn went 1 for 2, scored two runs and had an impressive five stolen bases. Tyra Christian, Ava Lester, Alison Via and Kaylee Garner each had one hit apiece. Glen Allen next will face Deep Run (6-6) at home this Friday.

Godwin High School

The 13th-best high school baseball team in the United States had another terrific showing during last week's action, proving once again why it is the favorite for this year's state title. The Eagles improved to 13-1 on the season following two back-to-back 10-0 wins over Hermitage last Tuesday and John Marshall last Thursday. Against the Panthers, Luke Smyers struck out nine in just four innings with no runs allowed to improve his record to 5-0 on the year. At the plate, Cole Powers was a perfect 3 for 3 on the day with a two-run home run and three RBIs. Other notable performances came from Juice Tobin (one run, one double), Dylan Hudson (one run, two RBIs), Jackson York (one run, one RBI), and David Trenkle (one RBI). Two days later against John Marshall, it was Connor Smith and Charlie Gunn who led the way at the mound. They each pitched two innings, striking out six and five, respectively. At the plate, it was  Trenkle who had his second consecutive perfect day of hitting, this time going 2 for 2 with one double, one triple and two RBIs. Eric Capps went 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI, and Will Ryan and Powers each went 1 for 1 to account for three runs. The Eagles will face Tucker (5-8) in their next game this Tuesday.

Hermitage High School

The Panthers’ baseball squad fell to 3-8 on the season following a 10-0 loss to a strong Godwin team last Tuesday. At the plate, Nick Suitte went 1 for 1, and Dro Posada and Troy Edmonds went 1 for 2. Defensively, Posada, Edmonds, Sam Maxwell, Brody Davis, and Christian Cisnerios each had a perfect day of fielding, resulting in six putouts collectively. The Panthers will face Meadowbrook (4-12) in their next game this week.

Highland Springs High School

The Highland Springs track and field program had an outstanding showing at the 20th annual Gar-Field Invitational last week, with a plethora of athletes placing within the top five as well as top 10 region 5C marks. On the boys’ side, Dewan Green ran a time of 15.69 in the 110-meter hurdles, then ran a personal best time of 42.43 in the 300-meter hurdles, and jumped 6 feet in the high jump, finishing third overall in each event. Green's marks are all top-three results in Region 5C this spring. In the 100-meter dash, Jakyre Henley ran a time of 11.27 to finish third overall. Henley’s season best time of 11.15 is still second in Region 5C this spring. In the throws, Joshua Clayton threw 41 feet, 2.25 inches in the shot put to finish third, and Josiah Martinez threw 114’ feet, 5 inches in the discus, both finishing third. In the jumps, Michael Hamlin jumped 20 feet, 9 inches in the long jump to finish fourth overall, and Brian Cunane jumped 40 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump to finish fifth.

For the girls, it was all Pryncess Jackson, who won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.50 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles in 48.31 seconds, and the triple jump with a mark of 37 feet, 3 inches. Jackson holds the third-fastest time in the 300-meter hurdles, the second-fastest time in the 100-meter hurdles, and the farthest distance in the triple-jump in Region 5C this spring.

Tucker High School

The Tigers’ girls ‘soccer team is now 6-4 on the season following an 8-0 victory over Varina last Thursday. Sophomore Cameron Swartz led the way with two goals, while Sana Khan, Tess Vithoulkas, Hailey Walker, Shraddha Kunaparaju, Esmeralda Portillo and Gabriella Castro each scored one goal apiece. After starting the season 1-2, the Tigers have been rolling, winning five of their last seven games. They now have the fourth-best record in Region 5C and will face Godwin (4-5) in their next game this Tuesday.

Varina High School

Varina’s softball team fell to 3-9 on the season after an 11-1 loss to Patrick Henry last Monday and a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to Tucker last Thursday. Despite the losses, there were some solid performances across the board during last week's action. Against the Patriots, Hailey Butler was perfect at the plate going 3 for 3 with the team’s lone run, one double and one stolen base. Camille Campbell also had a hit, going 1 for 3 on the day. Versus the Tigers, Tyy Turner led the way, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Butler had another solid performance, going 1 for 3 with two runs and one double, and excelled on the mound, striking out 13 in six innings. The Devils will face Hanover (11-0) in their next game this week.
