Deep Run’s softball team finished up a solid week of action, improving to 3-5 on the season after an 11-1 victory over Tucker last Monday and a close 3-1 loss to Godwin Friday. Against Tucker, Reese Roberson had an outstanding day on the mound, going the distance and allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts. At the plate, Teagan Baulsir went 3 for 3 with two doubles and 3 RBIs. Alana Collier went 2 for 3, also hitting two doubles and driving in three runs. Charlotte Boswell, Lily Zehmer, Gabby Chrapek and Jessica Kolkhorst each had hits, totaling five runs and six RBIs collectively. Against Godwin, Hope Tate took control of the mound, pitching six innings, allowing five hits and four strikeouts. At the plate, Roberson went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Boswell went 1 for 3 with one double, and Chrapek went 1 for 3. The Wildcats will host Thomas Dale (2-5) in their next game Monday.

Freeman High School

Freeman’s baseball squad improved to 7-2 on the season after a dominant 13-3 victory against Tucker last Friday. The Mavs were rolling on all cylinders at the plate, starting with Ryder Warren, who went 3 for 3 with three runs, one double and one RBI. Jonah Herbert went 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs; Matthew Britt went 2 for 4 with two runs and three RBIs; Finn Whipple went 1 for 3 with two runs, one double and one RBI; and Nolan Rayl went 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Willie Sellers also had a solid day on the mound, allowing three runs and striking out four. The Mavs will go on the road to face Hanover (6-3) Monday.

Glen Allen High School

The Jaguars’ softball squad fell to 6-1 following its first loss of the season to Hanover (8-0). It was a battle of the undefeated, and potentially the biggest challenge of the year for the Jags, but they competed well against one of the nation’s top high school softball programs. Offensively, Ashton Limbach led the way, going 1 for 2 with one run and one stolen base. Alyssa Meharg went 1 for 3 with one triple, and Kaylee Garner went 1 for 3 with one RBI. Defensively, Tyra Christian led the Jags with a perfect fielding percentage, totaling six putouts. Glen Allen will look to get back on track with a road game against Tucker (2-7) this Tuesday.

Godwin High School

The Eagles’ baseball squad improved to 10-0 on the season after its 13-0 victory over Maggie Walker last Tuesday and a close 1-0 victory over Deep Run last Friday. Against Maggie Walker, Luke Smyers had a massive night, going 3 for 3 with a three-run home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Caelan Funk also hit well, going 3 for 3 with a home run, two doubles, and three RBIs. Juice Tobin went 1 for 3 with two runs, and Garrett Mason went 1 for 3 with one run and one RBI. Against Deep Run, the win came from a big night on the mound from seniors Garrett Mason and Luke Smyers. Mason pitched five innings, allowing just two hits and totaled nine strikeouts, while Smyers came in afterwards and pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Offensively, Tobin led Godwin with a 1-for-2 night and the team’s lone run, while Funk had the lone RBI. After this week of action, the Eagles were picked as the 22nd best high school baseball team in the United States according to MaxPreps. Their next game will be against Atlee (9-2) this Wednesday.

Henrico High School

The Warriors’ track and field squad had a strong showing at the Run 804 Track High School Invitational last week. Malachi Hayes threw a new outdoor personal best of 50 feet, 2.5 inches in the shot-put to finish second overall and is now the top throw in Region 4B by more than six feet. Sprinter Dallas Gardner ran a new personal best of 51.10 in the 400-meter dash to finish second overall, good enough for the second-best time in the event in Region 4B this spring. On the girls’ side, Micailah Cook ran a time of 13.18 in the 100-meter dash to finish sixth overall and is now sixth in the event in Region 4B. In the long jump, freshman Dyvine Brooks set a new personal best of 14 feet, 5 inches to finish within the top 10. Brook’s mark is currently fifth in Region 4B.

Hermitage High School

The Hermitage baseball squad fell to 3-5 on the season after falling 13-3 to Highland Springs last Tuesday and 14-6 to Varina last Wednesday. Despite the losses during last week's action, the Panthers produced some strong performances across the board. Against the Springers, Conner Wharton went 1 for 3 with one run and one triple, while Semaj Adams went 2 for 3 with one run, one RBI and one double to lead the Panthers offensively. Against the Blue Devils, Jacob Kinney led the way, going 2 for 4 at the plate with one run and one RBI. Other notable performances include Adams, who went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and one double; Troy Edmonds, who went 1 for 3 with one run; and Brody Davis who went 1 for 4 with one run. They will be back in action this Tuesday, where they will go on the road to face Mechanicsville (7-3).

Highland Springs High School

The Springers’ baseball team improved to 8-2 on the season following a 13-3 victory against Hermitage last Monday. AJ Bullock led the way, going 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs, two RBIs, one double and one triple. Jayy Hamiel went 1 for 3 with one run and three RBIs; Eli Tillman went 2 for 4 with one run and two RBIs; Biggie Smith went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI; and Devon Porter went 2 for 4 with one run and two RBIs. Ike Wyatt had a good day on the mound, striking out eight while allowing just three runs in six innings. Highland Springs will go on the road to face Tucker (3-7) in its next matchup Wednesday.

Tucker High School

After a 3-3 start, the Tigers’ baseball team finds itself at 3-7 after an 8-2 loss to Deep Run last Tuesday and a 13-3 loss to Freeman last Friday. Though the losing streak continues for Tucker, there were plenty of notable performances from last week. Against the Wildcats, Caleb Wood led the way offensively, going 3 for 4 with one double, one RBI and one stolen base. Justin Helberg went 2 for 4 with one run and one stolen base, and Peyton Hinton went 1 for 3 with one run. Later on in the week against Freeman, Wood led the way once again, going 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI. Hinton went 1 for 3 with one run, and Yamal Ferguson went 1 for 3 with one RBI and one double. Tucker will play its next game against Glen Allen (5-1) on the road Tuesday.

Varina High School

Sprinter Eric Smith is off to a great start to his outdoor season. At the Run 804 Track High School Invitational, he set a personal best of 11.23 in the 100-meter dash to finish second overall. Smith then followed that up with a personal best mark of 22.84 in the 200-meter dash, finishing fourth overall. His 200-meter time is currently third in Region 4B, and his 100-meter time is now in the top 10 of Class 4 this spring. Teammate Jayden Ivy also had a strong showing, jumping a personal best distance of 20 feet, 10 inches in the long jump, to finish third overall. Ivy’s mark is now the second-best mark in Region 4B and the sixth best mark in Class 4.
