A Freeman High School student has been named the statewide winner of a Virginia Bankers Association scholarship program.

Emily Carter will receive a $7,500 college scholarship from the VBA Bank Day Scholarship Program.

“After reading Emily’s essay, we know that she is well equipped to succeed in college, and we are proud to be supporting her education financially through this program,” VBA President and CEO Bruce Whitehurst said.

The VBA Bank Day Scholarship Program began in 1991 when the third Tuesday in March was declared Bank Day in Virginia by the Virginia General Assembly.

Headquartered in Glen Allen, The VBA’s purpose for the Bank Day Scholarship Program is to educate students on the roles that banks play in a community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students participated in a virtual Bank Day experience. They were asked to write an essay about their experience, and 13 scholarships were awarded based on the merit of the essays.

“Whether learning about the difference between good and bad debt, various types of bank accounts, or how loans and interest are calculated, I gained an appreciation of the complexity of my interactions with the bank,” Carter said about her experience.

Eleven other students in the state were named regional winners or runners-up in the program.

The VBA Bank Day Scholarship Program will take place again next March.
