A team from Douglas Freeman High School competed over Memorial Day weekend at the 2023 High School National Quiz Bowl Championship Tournament in Atlanta.

The event, a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for teams of four students, matches teams against each other as they use buzzers to answer questions about science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas.

Freeman was one of 19 Virginia teams competing at the national championship and finished the preliminary rounds with a 5-5 record. It suffered a heartbreakingly narrow loss to LAMP from Montgomery, Alabama, 150-145 during round 4; defeated Hopkins from New Haven, Connecticut by the narrow margin of 205-195 during round 5; defeated Sylvania Northview (Ohio) 165-160 during round 6; and defeated Henderson County (Kentucky) 235-215 during round 20.

Freeman’s chance at a playoff appearance ended when it lost to a team from Greenville (South Carolina) in the 15th round.

The Freeman team was captained by Katie Hall, who was joined by Anuj Damle, Holly Jahn, George Li, Deeya Natarajan, Annabelle Nee, Luke Wolski, and Matthew Wozniak. The team was coached by Orien Altman.

The tournament champion was the “A” team from Barrington High School of Barrington, Illinois.

In total, 304 teams from 40 states competed at the event.
