Four Henrico teachers earn REB Awards

Four Henrico teachers are among the 34 recipients of REB Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence. The awards honor educators who demonstrate a sincere passion for teaching while also serving as mentors, coaches and champions for their students. The 16 winners and 18 finalists were selected from 136 nominations submitted by students, parents and colleagues. They will receive grants totaling $189,900.

Henrico County awardees are:

• Caroline Canning, Henrico High School – $11,500; she will use the money to learn about the effects of Apartheid, Nelson Mandela and social justice in South Africa and to make connections to literature through experiencing the culture of Zambia.

• Nichole Gross, Fairfield Middle School – $12,000; she will use the money to explore the cultures, landscapes, languages and arts that influence world literature and American culture through travel to England, France, Italy, Spain, Ghana and Morocco.

• Robert Meister, Glen Allen High School – $10,000; he will use the money to study improvisational handpan music and technique with international musicians from France, Portugal, and the U.S. to further enhance lessons in literature and writing.

• Robin Milwit, Greenwood Elementary School – $11,500; she will use the money to study emerging technologies that help develop students’ social and emotional skills by visiting schools and ed-tech companies in Finland and attending national technology conferences in Florida, California and the Fred Rogers Center in Pennsylvania.

In addition to the four winners, six other Henrico teachers were named finalists; each received a $750 cash award. They are:

• Jeannine Chewning, Hermitage High School
• Catherine Latcovich, Deep Run High School
• Cristina Lynn, Shady Grove Elementary School
• Joseph Palen, Deep Run High School
• Kristen Schemmel, Kaechele Elementary School
