Longtime Henrico delegate Jack Reid has died.

Reid, born in 1942, was a Republican who represented the 72nd District (which included a portion of Henrico’s West End) from 1990 until 2008.

He also had a long career in education, serving as a principal as Robious Middle School in Chesterfield County among other roles. In addition, he was active as a member of a number of community and religious organizations, including the Richmond Kiwanis Club, Tuckahoe Village Civic Association, West End Assembly of God and West Richmond Businessman’s Association, among many others.

Reid was a graduate of St. Christopher’s School and Wofford College and earned a master’s of education from the University of Virginia.

"Our Commonwealth is a lesser place today,” said Republican Speaker of the Virginia House Todd Gilbert. "While our time here overlapped by just a few years, I came to know Jack Reid as a giant of this body. He believed what he believed, and had no qualms about standing up for those beliefs, even if it meant standing alone. And on the odd occasion he made a mistake, he didn't shy away from owning up to it.

"We could spend hours talking about Jack Reid’s time here in the General Assembly, but those who knew Jack well knew that his real legacy — the one into which he poured his heart and soul — was his family. His wife Julia was the love of his life, having met her when they were both just 16. They never looked back. His remarkable children, John [a talk show host on WRVA] and Lisa, carry on his legacy in their own lives.”
