A 44-year-old Glen Allen man who coached the boys’ JV lacrosse team at Glen Allen High School this past season was arrested last month and charged with sexual offense with a minor by computer, a Class 6 felony.

Nathan Stanley Poe was arrested June 24 and arraigned in Henrico County General District Court four days later. He was released on his own recognizance and next will appear Oct. 6 for a preliminary hearing, according to court documents.

Poe allegedly made contact in April with a Henrico Police vice squad detective as part of an undercover operation targeting people who were seeking minors on the internet, police officials told the Citizen.

If convicted, Poe could face one to five years in prison, or a maximum one year in jail and a fine of no more than $2,500.

Poe served as a volunteer coach for GAHS and also has coached boys in the Richmond Strikers’ lacrosse program, according to a photo from the organization’s website. It was unclear how many seasons he had coached for the high school and when he last coached for the Strikers.

The alleged incident was not related to GAHS, according to Henrico Schools spokesperson Eileen Cox, who said that school system officials were made aware after the conclusion of the school year that Poe was being charged and that they subsequently ended his affiliation with the school system.

“As a volunteer, the suspect did not have an employment contract with the school division; however, all HCPS volunteers are subject to a background check as part of a screening process,” Cox said. “Anyone charged with or convicted of a crime involving children is not eligible to volunteer in our schools.”

The school did not notify parents of Poe's arrest until Wednesday, a day after the Citizen inquired with school system officials about the matter. Principal Reginald Davenport emailed parents to alert them that the arrest was not related to any incident at the school, Cox said.

"Since Mr. Poe’s alleged crime is unrelated to the school and his arrest occurred during summer break, a notification was not sent to families at that time," she told the Citizen.

The case remains an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information related to the case should call Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000 or Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
