The number of Henrico citizens who filed first-time unemployment claims during the week ending Dec. 5 more than tripled from the number who did so the previous week, data from the Virginia Employment Commission released Thursday showed.

A total of 483 people filed initial claims during the week – a jump of 201% from the 160 who filed the previous week, and an indication that the latter number was a temporary decline caused by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Statewide, first-time filings increased by 93.5% from the previous week.

A week after the county witnessed its lowest number of first-time filers since before the pandemic began, it witnessed the most in a single week in more than four months – since 666 filed the week ending Aug. 1.

Henrico’s total was sixth-highest among state localities; Richmond was fourth with 765 and Chesterfield eighth with 361.

The number of people who continued to file claims during the most recent week remained almost the same, dropping by just 17 to 2,556.
