First-time unemployment claims in Henrico during the most recent reporting week fell below 300 for the first time since late November, according to data released Thursday by the Virginia Employment Commission.

A total of 270 Henricoans filed initial claims during the week of Feb. 1-6, down from 309 during the last week of January. The number was the lowest since the week of Nov. 22-28, when 160 county residents filed first-time claims.

Henrico, the seventh-largest locality in Virginia, ranked 12th during the most recent week in the most first-time filers, a somewhat encouraging sign.

With 2,009 people filing continuing claims during the most recent week, Henrico ranked ninth among state localities, according to the VEC.
