Henrico Police have confirmed the fifth known case of rabies in the county this year.

A raccoon found in Sandston Dec. 2 has tested positive for the disease. A dog in the 100 block of Seven Pines Avenue cornered the raccoon under a back deck, prompting a call to police, who responded, captured the raccoon and then submitted it to the state lab for tests, which came back positive this week.

Contact between the dog and the raccoon was deemed likely, so the dog will be quarantined on the owner’s property. There were no other animal or human exposures reported.

Officials with the Henrico Police Animal Protection Unit remind citizens to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and the community. To report abnormal wildlife behavior and any possible rabies exposures, call Henrico Police at (804) 501-5000.
