Expanded GRTC routes, hours in Henrico begin Sunday

Table of Contents

A significant expansion of GRTC transit service in Henrico County will take effect Sept. 16.

The county's Board of Supervisors earlier this year voted to spend $1.2 million to expand routes and hours of service within the county to make more destinations available to riders. The county purchases bus service from GRTC annually.

Among the GRTC enhancements to Henrico service that will take effect Sept. 16:

• GRTC Route 7 A/B (Nine Mile Road) – Service hours will be extended to nights and weekends (6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday);

• Route 8 (Nine Mile/Richmond) – Service will operate temporarily between downtown Richmond and Dabbs House in Henrico.

• Route 18 (Henrico Government Center) – This route will be adjusted to provide service to the Willow Lawn Pulse station, Libbie Mill, the Amtrak Staples Mill station, Henrico Government Center and Henrico Doctors' Hospital. A portion of this route that served the West Broad Street corridor will be removed, since Route 19 expansion will adopt it.

• Route 19 – Perhaps the most anticipated single change in the county, this route will extend an additional seven miles west – all the way to Short Pump Town Center and West Broad Marketplace in Short Pump. Service will continue to operate every 30 minutes, and the fare will drop from $2 to $1.50. Service hours also will be extended to 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

• Route 75 (Three Chopt) – Additional trips will be added during the morning and evening peak hours to improve connections with the Pulse lines.

• Route 76 (Patterson Avenue) – Additional trips will be added during the morning and evening peak hours to improve connections with the Pulse lines.

• Route 91 (Laburnum Connector) – Service hours will be extended to 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, all West End routes connecting at Willow Lawn (50, 76, 77 and 79) will layover at the Willow Lawn Shelter instead of at Markel Road.

CARE service (scheduled in advance by riders) will drop to one ticket ($3) instead of two tickets ($6) for many destinations along West Broad Street that are served by Route 19.
