Henrico-based Elephant Insurance recently completed its fourth round of charitable giving to nonprofits, bringing its total amount of donations in the past year to $300,000, awarded to 52 nonprofits impacted by or providing relief related to the COVID pandemic.

The gifts were part of the insurer’s Helping Herd program, which launched in August 2021. All the nonprofits that benefited from the funds do work in the spaces of mental health; diversity, equity, and inclusion; physical health and community health, with each giving round focusing on one category.

Elephant team members were involved in the Helping Herd selection process, either by nominating deserving organizations by survey and/or participating in the voting process to finalize the recipients.

“It has been a gift for our team to have the opportunity to give back to so many organizations throughout the last year doing good and important work,” said Elephant CEO Alberto Schiavon. “We’re proud of this program and the community-wide impact it created, and we’re inspired to keep giving back and finding ways to reach the communities we serve.”

The fourth and final round of Elephant’s employee-driven COVID-relief donations focused on nonprofits that serve the community in the community health space, totaling $100,000 in donations across 14 different organizations. St. Joseph’s Villa and Comfort Zone Camp received the most votes and largest donation amounts, with each organization receiving $15,000.

“St. Joseph’s Villa is extremely grateful for the generosity of Elephant Insurance’s Helping Herd initiative,” said Elizabeth C. Mason, director of development at St. Joseph’s Villa. “With the help of partners like Elephant Insurance, the Villa is able to provide more than 3,000 children and families the opportunity to succeed through innovative and effective services each year. This gift will help Villa programs serve friends from 50+ localities throughout Central Virginia this year, including those who are homeless; who are experiencing social, emotional, or academic challenges; who have a mental illness, including youth in mental health crisis; and who have been diagnosed with autism or other developmental disabilities. Without community-minded partners like Elephant Insurance, this life-changing, and life-saving, work would not be possible.”

“We are truly honored and grateful to receive this wonderful gift from Elephant Insurance,” said Lynne B. Hughes, CEO and founder of Comfort Zone Camp. “To be selected by Elephant Insurance’s employees and to include grieving children in ‘The Herd’ makes it extra special. This gift will be used to send more children to camp to learn to heal from their losses. Elephant Insurance and its employees are pivotal to the children’s healing process.”

The program was made possible by Elephant’s parent company, Admiral Group.
